I take it back, Morehead was pretty bad.
Since 2000 State has had 7 seasons of 8 wins or better. Here is the kicker though. 4 of these have been 3 years after an Ole Miss coaching change.
-Cut is fired after 04. 3 years later State goes 8-5.
-Ed O is fired after 07. 3 years later State goes 9-4.
-Nutt is fired after 11. 3 years later State goes 10-3 then 9-4.
-Freeze is fired after 16. Moorhead messed up the pattern and goes 6-7 with a talented team.
-Luke is fired after 19. 3 years later State goes 9-4.
My theory is that when Ole Miss goes through a coaching change, State gets the majority of in state players. When those players become year 3 players in the program, State has great years. Moorhead screwed up with a really talented team.

He was given an absolutely loaded roster *allegedly
His defense averaged 13.2 points per game allowed in 2018
For an offensive savant, which was his billing, 8-5 was a tremendous let down

What’s Mullen’s record at his current HC gig?
Is this where we pretend Mullen couldn’t land any bottom tier MAC job with one phone call if he wanted?

Pank, Moorhead's first MSU team had the No. 1 defense in the country and the SEC's all-time leading rusher at QB.
He won 8 games.
I'll give you that his second year was an overachievement, but he should have won 10 games his first year. He had a ton of guys that are currently highly compensated for football playing.

Historically, 8 wins is a good season for State. They have only had one season with that many wins since Moorhead went 8-5. Here is how many 8 win or better seasons State has had by decade:
1970s: 1
1980s: 2
1990s: 3
2000s: 2
2010s: 6
2020s: 1
The worst thing that happened to State was Dan Mullen having the success he did and getting them that brief number one ranking. State is not a program that has the pull to get an established top notched coach but some started believing they did. And younger coaches with upside often have a few bumps in the road. For the most part, knee jerk firings seem to usually not work out well for a school. If State fires their coach if they go 6-6 in the regular season they are going to struggle to ever have any continuity. Again, the grass isn’t always greener.

What State puts on the field this year is going to be Croomtacular.
I don’t think so. I liked what I saw in the spring game.
We won’t be good, but we won’t be croom awful. I think we will be competitive and can get to 6 wins.
ASU won like 3 games last season and we have 3 cupcakes. Florida and Arky are winnable SEC games. You never know with Aggy
The others will be tough though unless Missouri drops way off

Dan Mullen was the tits at state.

Nah. We're going to score points. It's the stopping the other team from scoring points that's going to be a struggle.

Timing matters. Joe’s fight was deliberate to establish his credibility as the leader because he was the new kid on the team. It was before the season began, not before a bowl game.

That isn’t the bragging point you think it is.

As much as I liked Mike Leach, his record did not scream that. They were pretty much the same. I do think that Leach had MSU on the right track. But I also get why Joe Moorhead feels like Mississippi State stabbed him in the back. Moorhead’s average record over two seasons: 7-6 Leach’s average record over three seasons: 7-6
This is disingenuous
Moorhead inherited a senior laden loaded roster.
8-5
6-7
Leach inherited a gutted roster and barely had enough scholarship players to field a team half the season during covid, and most were freshman/sophomores.
4-7
7-6
9-4
And Leach beat a lot of ranked opponents in that stretch

His second team didn’t overachieve in the least bit. They had one of the easiest schedules in the SEC and went 6-7. That thing was tailor made for 8-4 if you just beat a merely decent Kansas State at home and beat a 1-4 Tennessee team that was knocking on death’s door before they found State.

I’d argue that’s being pretty consistent at MSU
Point being he averaged more wins his final 4 seasons than he did his first 5 seasons

I was rewatching better call Saul last night and couldn’t help but think the relationship between Jimmy and Chuck is identical to OM-State

He did well with Moorhead’s roster.

Would you agree that he won less his final two years than the two years before that?

So how is it working out for State?
Posted on 8/28/24 at 3:12 pm to Olemissrebs2020
State isn't committed to winning 10 games a year. Ole Miss is. As long as Ole Miss keeps kiffin, State will only accomplish one of their goals each year at most.
