I remember when he scared the hell out of Gino Toretta by lining Alabama’s entire elite defense up on the line of scrimmage during the 93 Sugar Bowl. It set the tone for the rest of the game.

A few years ago I was listening to Torretta on Sirius. He said that after a couple of series, he's on the bench on the phone with the coaches in the booth, asking them what's Bama doing. Coaches say he's gonna have to give them another series or two to figure it out. Torretta yells "frick you!! My head's hitting the concrete on every play!!"

No disrespect intended toward a great man, but according to Mildred, they were friends too.

I coached his son, Bill, in basketball, and he and his wife were fine people. They were at nearly all of his games, and were exemplary fans/parents. RIP.

The Sugar Bowl v Miami was big but he and Paul Davis got together to welcome John Reeves and Carlos Alvarez to Auburn in 1969 with a defense that made 9 interceptions oo the media darlings that day. About 10 years later, I had the chance to watch him at practice at Tuscaloosa and I can hear his voice calling out “Jeremiah” to J. Castile.

Truly a special man and what a unique honor to be so beloved by both Alabama and Auburn fans. His 92 defense at Bama may well be the best of all time. But people forget how terrible Auburn’s defense was when he came in. A few years later, they were in the SEC championship game. Then came the messy ending to the Tater Tot saga in 1998, and several of the players wanted him over Tuberville.

One of the best defensive minds to ever walk the college football sidelines. The 92 Bama defense is the best college defense ever fielded. You had about a second and a half max to throw the ball. And you could not run on them, either. Rest In Peace, Brother.

What always gets me about that game:

George Teague intercepted a Heisman QB and ran it back for a Pick 6 in a national championship game.

And no one remembers that because it's the SECOND biggest highlight of the game for him.

Obliterated that 1992 Miami Offense. To this day one of the best dismantling performances of an elite offense ever.

One of the top few college defenses I've watched in my lifetime, and possibly the best defensive backs overall.

He was a hell of a defense coach. RIP Brother Oliver.
