In 2009, University of Alabama linebacker Eryk Anders was delivering big hits for one of the best defenses in college football history. Today, Anders is dishing out hits of another kind as an aspiring mixed martial arts fighter.
The 6-foot, 230-pound former Tide star participated in his first sanctioned bout on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Cullman against Zach Howell and walked away a winner.
"It's something I've been wanting to get into for a long time" Anders said of mixed martial arts fighting. "I've always watched it on TV and I was a state champion wrestler in high school so it appealed to me right away."

What is he? About 24? 26? It might not be too late. He's a great athlete. He just wasn't big enough to play his preferred position.

He was in the 2005 class, so that would make him about 25.

Good for him. Thankfully he's able to do something else he loves since he couldn't make it in the NFL due to his size. Is there any info in there saying whether or not he could fight on TV? That would be pretty cool.

These are low-level fights. I don't think it will be on TV. His next fight in in Biloxi, Mississippi, next month.

Yea, thought he was a solid player for us, and underrated too.
he just needs to pretend his opponents are NFL Scouts.

Maybe he can work his way up and make it on TV in the future. Just has to keep winning, and he's a big, strong guy. I guess we'll see...

the chances of this happening are close to zero.

I hope he doesn't get hurt.
That MMA shite scares me. It hurts to watch.
I always loved Eryk's sweet fro.

He's come a long way from being an undersized HS NG and a late Shula signee.

Still possible, though.

He played in the IFL with the Colorado Ice this past season.

I thought him getting cut by the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL was shitty. He had made the team, but they had a maximum number of American born players they could keep.

I'd say they are much better than zero. Apparently, he won by submission in the first 50 seconds of the first round and got submission of the night. I'm not saying he will be successful, but he is a natural athlete with size and speed with a wrestling background. I might go down to Biloxi to watch the fight.

It is a LOOONG process. You can go 10-0 and people still don't know who you are.

Oh without a doubt, but he does have some attributes that your average wannabe does not have. Too bad he cut the fro. That would have helped.
