1989 Tennessee-Auburn game will always be Johnny Majors' best win, in my opinion. Classic 80s football, 2 legendary coaches, and both SEC winners.

I remember that one. I was a Sr in HS and living in Chattanooga. Remember waking up and it was storming outside. Was storming all across East TN. I immediately thought, Oh shite! And I was right. We couldn’t hold onto the damn football all day. It was awful.

Here is a link to the broadcast intro of the 1989 game at Neyland.

It will make you miss the old days.

Much gets made over the loss of the Auburn-Florida annual series due to the fact that the two teams had met 80 times by the time the rivalry ended on an annual basis after 2002…

First, rivalries don't have to end because they are scheduled every year. It's really not a rule that's written somewhere. The Big 6 of the SEC all have a very special historical rivalry just from being good enough to decide the SEC over the years.

Some teams, like Florida, may have been played every year, but they mostly suxed to high heaven. Hardly a growing concern for the barners back in the day. When Steve Spurrier and a few of Charlie Pell's Gator teams were relevant, maybe those years meant a little more.

Real historical rivalries need to be categorized as equals over a much longer period of time.

Agreed. I still feel Auburn and Florida is a heated rivalry that picks right up regardless of how many years have passed since our last meeting.

That rivalry is why I want the 4 team pod with Tennessee Alabama Vandy and Auburn.

Agree, but it’s hard to maintain any intensity when you play so rarely. This season will mark 18 years of Auburn and Florida only played twice.

Auburn and Tennessee are at 3 times in 16 years.
