But my question is how did AU play UF every year in the 90's

I think teams had 2 cross division rivals in the 90's like someone said, but I'm not sure.

UF did play AU every year in the 90's though.

Heres highlights of the 95 UF @ AU game: LINK

Even though I am an Auburn graduate, our daughter goes to the University of Georgia (thanks Hope Scholarship!) and is in the Redcoat band.

Teams did in fact have 2 cross division rivals until 2002 when they switched to 1 so that the everyone would play everybody in a 4-5 year cycle instead of 6-7.

When this happened, UF wanted to keep Auburn as their permanent West rival since they had played them the most out of any West schools, but AU wanted UGA and vice versa.

Who voted against us moving to the East? I heard a rumor that UF, UGA, UT, and Bama were against it which killed the idea.

LSU wants us to go (and take Bama with us),

UT and Bama didn't want their rivalry killed

UF and UGA didn't want us competing for their spot in Atlanta

Alabama was just too much for Georgia Southern too.

Always great to see a Bama fan use the word 'Utah' in a sentence.

Yeah cause Utah went undefeated meanwhile bush league Utah State embarrassed Auburn with their weak arse squad.

At the time the divisions split happened, Auburn was in a down period, but was coming off that dominant run in the 80s.

LSU was down, Alabama was hitting their stride and everyone in the West wasn't great.

UGA was okay, Florida was obviously hitting their 90s peak, and UT was rising. The East teams were more or less afraid that if AU was in the East then it would essentially be what the West is currently, and UA would have an easy pass to the Championship game, which almost every coach was not a fan of the idea of.

So it got settled out that Auburn would be in the West and Vandy in the East to keep it competitive.

At least that's what I've always been told.
