I understand that, but you also must realize that the current system was not in place when Tennessee was a top-tier SEC program.
Prior to 2003, it used to be 5-2-1, not 5-1-2.

I've said it before and said it again.
LSU has to play UF plus UT/UGA 8 years out of 10. We can recruit our asses off, but having 2 of those 3 year in and year out will cost us a few SEC Championship Game appearances a decade.
Its not fair while other conference opponents get UK, Vandy, and SC as their permanent opponents.

There is an unfairness to the current schedule...but it does make for a great game every year and if you want to be the best, you need to beat the best....FWIW, IMO.

The system was different. Teams did not have ONE cross-division permanent opponent.
Obviously, the more cross-division permanent opponents you have, the fairer it gets. Take the optimal (although not feasible solution) of having SIX permanent cross-division opponents. Then, everyone plays everyone.
So, although not much change from 2 permanents to 1, the more opponents each team is playing cross division the more competitively fair the scheduling policy becomes.
Nonetheless, we digress. I really think the best compromise would be what Okie suggested ... if the Auburn-Georgia and Bama-Tennessee is so important to the conference and to those fanbases, then yall are welcome to keep those permanent opponents, but everyone else should rotate in the interest of fairness.
