Here are key points:
1.) LSU does not yet know what it has in JJ, he has not gone through an SEC schedule. He looked impressive against GT but had a month to game plan for the game and GT is not an SEC defense.
-LSU returns all but two starters off the 4th highest scoring offense in the SEC last year. Our situation at QB in 2009 is 100% improved than it was going into 2008.
- GT isn't in the SEC, but Georgia scored only 42 points against GT's defense, vs 52 against LSU. GT was 2-0 vs the SEC before LSU beat them.
2.) LSU is still unsure on defense, we (being LSU fans) talked up the defense last year. With Beckwith, RJF, Tyson Jackson, Woods, all coming back we assumed they would put pressure on a QB and cause havoc. That did not happen so just cause we brought in a bigger name DC does not automatically equal improvement. I wanna see what they look like in an actual game not what I assume they will be this year.
-Last year at this time everyone was asking "Is the offense really that good, or the defense just that bad?" Again, the defense is 100% improved from last year, simply by eliminating the confusion caused by the co-coordinators.
3.) Bama lost 2 offensive lineman LSU lost 2 offensive lineman. Yet we assume Charles Scott will be fine. Ingram is better than Coffee and would have started over him had he returned. Ingram will easily get 1200 yards this year maybe more.
-We're not assuming, we will be. LSU returns both OT's...the 2nd most important position on the offense after QB. Both our OG and our center replacements were higher-rated recruits than ones Alabama is replacing their starters with. In addition, LSU returns TE Richard Dickson, so that's 4/6 on our o-line returning vs, 3/6 for the Tide's o-line.
4.) Bama will only want their QB to throw for around 150 yards a game and limit his INT's. Their defense will be top of SEC again.
-Both of those are huge assumptions. Yes, the Tide returns nine starters, But the Tide defense will be facing a much bigger challenge this year, in that their main rivals will all be improved on offense while the Tide offense has taken a step back. The Tide defense will be on the field longer this year.
5.) Anyone can go undefeated with right breaks. Bama did last year till Florida game. Any team can if a ball bounces just the right way during a game, or a QB makes the wrong read. Luck is involved in all sports, you just have to accept that.
LSU was lucky to play in the 2 NC's we played in this year. By people losing ahead of us and some friendly computers.
-Alabama had incredible luck last year. Just compare their situation with Georgia's. The Tide was thinner depth-wise than the Bulldogs at every position going into the year. Yet the Bulldogs got decimated by injuries on both o-line and d-line. The Tide had no significant injuries to speak of.
LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee, all had unexpected QB troubles at the same time. Arkansas and Ole Miss had new coaching staffs, and Ole Miss and LSU were breaking in new QB's. Miss. St. tanked and fired their coach. Alabama returned a four year starter at QB that was their all-time leading passer, so they had a huge edge over every other team in the west. This year, the shoe is on the other foot.
Basically the Tide got almost every break you could think of in 2008. The law of averages alone suggests the Tide will not get the same kind of luck this year.
The closer you get to opening day, the more sports writers will begin to realize the true state of affairs in the SEC. The Tide is living off of borrowed glory from last year.

Like having an average margin of victory being 21 points.
The guy made some good points. He said nothing that Lsu will stink it up, only that there are alot of uncertainties that have to be proven out. They're talented enough to have a great season, but there is alot unproven coming off of last season at this point.

You bring up avg margin of victory, but fail to mention that you beat Uk by 3, Ole Miss by 4, and LSU by 6 in OT.
It's not a stretch to think you lose all three of those games this year, due to being worse on offense while your rivals have all improved.
TBH, I wouldn't be shocked if Arkansas beats the Tide in 2009. And I fully expect Auburn to be improved enough to have a chance at victory as well.
The entire SEC will be much more competitive in 2009 than it was in 2008.

And you lost to Florida by 30, Georgia by 14, Ole Miss by 18.
It's not a stretch to think they'll blow you out again, after all, they will be improved, by your words. TBH, I could see Arkansas slipping by again, since they will be improved offensively and have a chance at victory.

It's not out of the question, but it's unlikely given the positive changes that have occurred since then. namely, a whole new defensive staff and an obvious new attitude change, one commented on by sportswriters from as far away as Atlanta.
Please tell me what the corresponding positive changes are to Alabama's offense?
Because from here, losing two All-Americans off the o-line, your starting QB (who was your all-time leading passer), and your starting RB mean a BIG drop off in production from last year.

So because you barely beat Troy, all of sudden Tulane is now a loasable game for LSU? How about Auburn being improved also? LSU barely beat them last year too.

Love seeing these kind of expectations put out there for ol' $abear.
Last time he coached against Beamer, he got his a** handed to him. Fortunately for LSU, Coach Miles evened the score by handing VT their a**. And that was the ACC champ VT team.
Brick suppliers in Bammer should gear up now for what may be a very busy fall sale event.

You calling ANYONE else a retard is both laughable and hypocritical. There seems to be a lot more people thinking you're a retard than do me.
And I note you haven't refuted a single point I made.

Yes that's right, because everyone else thinks you're a nut job, they're all wrong and you're all right.

I remember a time when LSU brought in a big time DC who wanted a safety to play more a linebacker type position... His name was Lou Tepper
How can you say JJ is the real deal based off 1 game vs a non-sec team??? Honestly he hasn't had to face that good a team, plus lets not forget he had a month to game plan against GT. He wont get that much time against anyone in SEC.
Defense, just because we brought in Chavis does not guarantee LSU defense is improved. There are still concerns along the defensive line. Take off the P&G glasses you will see that. We are not sure how secondary will perform or LB's we expect improvement but still until they hit field you don't know if they are.
I would still take Bama defense over LSU defense with game on the line. I am like most LSU fans I expect 10 wins out of this years squad but at same time I would not be surprised at 8. You have to be realistic.

You're comparing John Chavis to Lou tepper and you're asking ME to be realistic?
Dude...
The thing is, it's not just LSU fans, and it's not just a few observers saying that LSU's defense looks great.
EVERYONE is saying that. If anyone has a link saying otherwise, I'd love to see it.
I'll say it again: LSU returns all but two starters off of the 4th highest scoring offense in the SEC last year. And last year we began with a transfer from Harvard's JV football as starter, backed up by a redshirt and a true freshmen QB's.
We're 100% better off at QB this year, regardless who starts. And we have more weapons on offense than any other team in the SEC.
And since the Saban's defense depends so much on his offense controlling the clock, we'll have to see how that works out.
LSU has recruited at a very high level for the last five years. We have the talent. We always did. This year, we now have the coaching as well to return to 2007 levels. The enthusiasm is back.
It's our year.
