I absolutely love this thread because it's so subjective and very few of us, if any in fact, have spent enough time in all 14 cities/towns to weigh in on this list with great credibility.

I think some folks allow "football gameday" to cloud their judgement on ranking these cities/towns. I'm trying to rank based on experiences, or perception for those places I've yet to make it to, and most importantly, overall quality of life, healthy economy, etc. In other words, can I see myself living in these places?

Having said that, here's my two cents based on places I've been combined with my desire to visit the others:

1. Athens - Been, and right there with Cville, VA
2. Nashville - Been
3. Oxford - Never been
4. Auburn - Been, went to grad school here
5. Lexington - Been, went to undergrad here
6. Fayetteville - Never been
7. Tuscaloosa - Been
8. Gainesville - Never been
9. Columbia, SC - Been
10. Columbia, MO - Never been
11. Baton Rouge - Never been
12. College Station - Never been
13. Starkville - Never been
14. Knoxville - I've been too many times

While I disagree that Oxford sucks, I have no idea why it is ranked so high in comparison to other SEC towns. Even Starkville is slightly bigger has bars, restaurants (with more coming fast), nature, a commercial airport nearby..even two large casinos are a short drive away, but these "experts" don't seem to know any of these things. "In the middle of nowhere" well ya even driven into Oxford?? Pick a route, it's rural, just like Starkville. I have probably been to both towns more than anyone on the Rant. What differences that are left are diminishing every year.

I haven't spent a "considerable amount of time" in New Orleans, but I've been there five times this century. I have no idea as I've only spent time in the quarter and adjacent areas for a few days at a time.

I've been to a football game in every SEC town except for Lexington, CS & Mizzou (they weren't in the league when I was in school in the 2000s) during college or right after and have spent a Friday night out in each. So, here are my rankings in terms of just of feel, fun and overall looks.

1. Athens
2. Oxford
3. Fayetteville
4. Tuscaloosa
5. Knoxville
6. Auburn
7. Baton Rouge
8. Columbia
9. Gainesville
10. Starkville

* I don't count Nashville as a college town because it isn't.

Have you spent a considerable amount of time in New Orleans? If so, how does Fayetteville's hipster crowd compare to the Crescent City's?

Hahaha yea no

There is no nature in Oxford, Mississippi.

Memphis is an hour away.

Tunica is no more than an hour from Oxford.

Wrong. I lived there for five years.

Keep toeing this line. As long as places like Zorba's and the Hunt Club exist, you're just blowing hot air.

A few nits to pick from your post:

I think Oxford is now larger than Starkville (it has seen explosive growth as Starkville has stayed more or less stagnant)

"Has bars"
Lolz, how awesome

"Two large Casinos are a short drive away"
Those shite Indian casinos in Philadelphia? We have Tunica, the 3rd largest casino resort in America, at the same distance from Oxford.

"In the middle of nowhere"
Oxford is an hour from Memphis. Starkville is 3 hours from anywhere.

Tennessee wins with both Nashville and Knoxville representing.

For those of you saying Nashville isn't a college town, I think we all agree on that. Even the article kinda mentions that.

Why is anyone arguing about places within an hours drive of the town? Who cares?

"Man, Baton Rouge is awesome because I can get to New Orleans in an hour and a half"

"Athens is great because Atlanta is 60 miles away"

"Columbia is only two hours from Charleston!"

I will say the drinks in Starkville are dirt cheap, maybe the cheapest drinks I'm aware of in the whole country.

It's like they're begging people to come out, but they still would rather chill at the Highlands

Now that I think about it, that's a pretty small group of people. I wonder if some of them have ties to LSU? I can't figure out how else to make sense of Baton Rouge being so high. That place is a cesspool.

As much as I like LSU, I agree with this... While on my way to New Orleans, I drove through that dump... To say that it was an ugly city is an insult to the word ugly.. And that river looks like something out of Chernobyl...

While I don't care for casinos, Tunica and Memphis are not near Oxford. But go ahead and claim Oxford as part of the greater Memphis metropolitan area

Oh I know. Oxford would have no reason to brag about Memphis or a lake. Because Oxford is awesome.
