Hal always went his own way.

Cut and pasted from a JDHLaw post in 2014:

In 1998, LSU hosted UK and, prior to the game, Gerry DiNardo made some comments critical of UK and Mumme, saying that UK ran a gimmick offense and, what with Mumme's penchant for playing Jimmy Buffett during practices, that UK didn't take football in the SEC seriously enough.

Mumme had a student manager get a hotdog with all the toppings from LSU concessions and, when he met DiNardo at midfield during warmups, he was eating the hotdog.

UK went on to upset LSU 39-36.
lmao one of the great stories in UK football lore. DiNardo was such an uptight a-hole and Coach Mumme knew it. The hotdog shtick rustled the frick out of DiNardo. Always one of my favorite UK football memories

He arrived in Lexington my second year of grad school.

This place had endured Bill Curry's run for several years, but even one was bad enough for me. The year prior to Mumme the UK/UL game was renewed; the winner awarded the Governor's Cup. UK prevailed and Bill discussed stadium expansion during the subsequent coach's show...then we lost 11 straight.

The first year saw a good number of losses, but we were finally moving the football and scoring. Air Raid sirens in the end zone, hard hats in the student section (I think they called it the bomb shelter), and big slow-assed SEC linebackers chasing a bunch of 5'9" track guys around in the secondary. For the fans of a team that wasn't remotely competitive, it was glorious.

Good times.

Yep. Was a season ticket holder during all of this, and it was fun to watch football again.

Is it just me or does he look better now than he did as a Head Coach

TF are you laughing at? That rat fink Petrino was the best think to happen to your shite program since Art Briles...and his offense had its origins in Mumme.

The 3 yards and a cloud of dust offenses of the SEC are long gone. Even Alabama is tossing it around 30+ times a game. Speed is now everything...and that is a function of spreading the field and making defenses cover 53 lateral yards.

Sorry baw. You are wrong and may sit there in your wrongness and just be wrong some more.

Mumme ball was fricking fantastic after Power I-Formation Bill Curry. Mo up the middle every down.

1) The air raid sirens were amazing.

2) Mike Leach rollerblading around the Kirwan dorms quad was possibly the weirdest thing I ever saw.

Mike Leach roller blading around Masterson Station neighborhood with a walkman on was even funnier. God, I loved the late 90's UK football but they sure were some odd ducks on the coaching staff. Can't forget the one who brought the program down (Claude Bassett RIP) having to ride around practice on a golf cart because he was too fat. Mike Fanoga running around Lexington in traditional Hawaiian attire, and Hal being asked by a child on the call in show "What he does in his down time" and replying with "Well, you can in a few years but right now, I like to lay around in my backyard hammock listening to Jimmy Buffet while enjoying a nice glass of bourbon."
