I am at the point where I hope they cease to exist. There are very few quality people left at that company. They sold out on the loudmouth blowhards. There are plenty of networks who would pick up the live sports they cover.

Read something on Reuters about them dropping some of their less prominent channels

Like most here, I rarely watch ESPN anymore except for games and maybe the occasional 30-for-30 or special, like The Last Dance.

But I don't know anyone who watches any of their other channels at all, so I guess this doesn't come as a surprise.

Surprised Disney hasn't sold them off. 500 employees will not dent their bottom line.

Haven't watched ESPN for years.

How do you watch SEC college football games? Chances are, your team is gonna be on one of the ESPC networks every weekend.

ESPN has to adapt, and they have not done a good job.

1. Get woke go broke - This is true for some companies, and it is true for ESPN. Their value has always been sports. They are more a sports soap opera than detailed analysis and high lights. People moved away from this.

2. Cable is no longer a choke hold. ESPN made absurd money when compared to any other network on basic cable packages. Now that streaming is countering cable tv, it is really hurting ESPN. People are taking packages without sports because they cost substantially less.

3. Younger people are less likely to watch a full sports game, and instead will watch ten minute highlight clips. You see it with the WWE as well. Much easier to just see what happens on social media in 20 minutes than watch a three hour Raw.

Times have changed. ESPN has to adapt in all three fazes or they will not be a company in ten years.

"Haven't watched ESPN in years".

He should probably clarify. Back in the 90s when I was in college, they would play SportCenter on a loop every morning. And if I didn't have class I usually had it on - the same episde over and over. It was fun, fresh, much better than most stuff on the TV at the time (this was the era of Jenny Jones/Rikki Lake, that type BS during the day). There wasn't 24/7 talk, and usually the days had replays of games from the prior weekend. There NFL shows were great.

Even if you took the politics out of the equation, everything about ESPN is stale. The ad nauseam panel talks about the stupidest sh*t that no one cares about. "Personalities" that have no personality, and just sit there in there little boxes discussing the most inconsequential bullshite so they can fill up 24 hours of time.

The ratings have probably bottomed out for now, but they have major issues going forward. Most of us over 35 years of age grew up loving sports and it was an integral part of our lives. It is not that way with the current generation (possible exception of soccer in the US for obvious reasons). I don't think their decision is political - they just have something more entertaining to pass the time, that we did not have when we were 20 years old.

But yeah I cut the cable 4 years ago, and I don't miss it at all. I find ways to watch the Auburn games, but including basketball, that is about 100 hours out of an entire year.

IMO, this was the actual beginning of the downfall of ESPN.

SportsCenter was the pinnacle of highlights, and when people started getting those online, it cast a huge shadow over the future of their programming.

They went away from such content and doubled-down on the social interest angle, which has clearly backfired.
