How about the "University of Southern California".

There are 4 Pac 12 Cali teams that are D1.

Or "Miami". Small private school in South Florida.

Think deeper.

Penn State - The school in Penn.

Ohio State - The school in Ohio.

V-Tech - The school in VA.

Florida State - Second school behind Florida
Texas A&M - Second school behind Texas (with large image problems)

what about them? they are like Texas

A&M is like UCLA, second fiddle.

Or third if you count TCU as Stanford.

Texas has 4 at least.

Of course my fellow Arkansas fan gets it.

Monticello,

Please don't bring logic into this as Arkiebillies cannot handle it.

The bottom line remains:

A&M succeeded in the SWC because we could differentiate ourselves between UT, Ark, SMU, TxTech, TCU, etc.

When the Big XII formed, A&M had a hard time differentiating between OU/UT.

Now, we're back to being different...which is a good thing from a recruiting standpoint. We are the Texas SEC school.

Watch us folks, because we're thoroughly danngerous

Auburn is second fiddle, right? Bama fans tell them they are.

Florida has 3 "big name" programs, all of which have at least 1 title within the last 16 years. Wonder how that is possible? Could it be because the state of Florida has enough talent to fill 3 quality football programs, kind of like the state of Texas?

hiring morons as HCs had way more to do with Ark's mediocrity in the 90s and 00s than did moving to the SEC... we've all seen what a good coach can do there in a relatively short period of time.

It's not like the SECW was the murderer's row it is today back in the 90s... LSU was pretty bad, Bama was good early but feel off, Auburn was hit and miss (mostly miss), and OM & MSU were themselves.

A&M has personally produced the same number in the last 50 years that Florida had before Steve Spurrier and then Urban Meyer arrived. Florida didn't have any because they were FSU and Miami's "little brother". Surely having a good coach could never put them on equal footing.

Fair enough...I'd say the exact same thing about A&Ms struggles in the Big 12.

Why did Bama and LSU suck pre-Saban? Why does Tenn suck now? Why did Texas and OU suck pre Mack and Stoops?

Coaching coaching coaching

The point I'm making is that unlike Arkansas, A&M is geographically located in prime recruiting country, just like Florida is. Therefore, having the right coach in place will go even further. Being the only Texas school in the SEC will go even further.

No clue if Sumlin is that guy or not. time will tell.

If you cannot differentiate (aka beat) yourself from a school out of state now, how in the frick do you suppose you're going to manage to be ANY different NOW with the likes of LSU? I guess they are your new OU? shite, you bitches have a hard enough time as is with US.

The excuses never end.

you finally said it as did our Auburn friend just above you. coaching has had more to do with the success and failures of Arkansas and A&M over the last 20 years than recruiting pipelines and conference affiliation. Nutt and Petrino landed roughly the same amount and star rating of Texas recruits yet Petrino was able to get us to 11 wins and a top 5 finish.

Arkansas's not far away from east texas.... and any 'geographical' advantage A&M might have over Arkansas, they more than make up for it with things like beautiful campus, better stadium, more recent success, etc....

The reason A&M has been mediocre over the last 15 years is we got way behind the 8-ball in facilities in the mid to late 90s. Texas was at the forefront of this and Mack Brown was in retrospect a phenomenal hire. Texas recruited at a much higher level and Stoops coming in at OU didn't help either. Slocum couldn't keep any of his good assistants because the AD wouldn't pay them. Fran was a disaster but the lack of vision from A&M's leadership, who were content to rest on their laurels, paved the way for A&M's mediocrity.

It didn't have anything to do with the weirdness factor of traditions or the perception of being second rate. A&M was WAY weirder and further behind in prestige when we were actually good in football.

Sorry for the obligatory defensive Aggie post, which are all too common on this board.

As for the article, the worst part about the rivalry ending is now I actually have to spend Thanksgiving with my family. shite!

I admit it. All it takes is a good coaching hire. OU and Texas got theirs as RC Slocum declined. We started lagging behind in facilities. Then came Fran.....who shat all over the program. He was a cancer. Sherman built a foundation, yet failed to capitalize. All it takes is one good coaching hire.
