UPI/Coaches & NFF since inception handed out National Championships before bowl games, that was changed in 1974
Texas received Coaches & NFF National Championship Trophies before their bowl game, like every other team for decades
Bowl games were made more important after the rule change in 1974, before that they were more of a vacation/way less relevant, as Trophies were already handed out

Yes, our two claims that predate the AP Poll and are both included in the NCAA records, which were both undefeated seasons (including one year the team went completely unscored on), are very fake and terrible, but Texas’s partial season championship that the AP awarded to another team is very real and strong.
And don't worry, your obsessing over A&M history is not a bad look and we all still think your school is full of real tough cowboys and not Yellowstone cosplaying mouthbreathers.
