This whole saga is interesting. I guess I can see Eli's and Alabama's point of view. I know he's disappointed and hurt, but say what you want aboult Alabama, they have bent over backwards for him forever. Remember, when he took over for John Forney in football ,he did basketball, too. But basketball was cutting in to his lucrative NASCAR assignments. Kinda surprised he's being so vocal about his ouster.

With that said, I'd like to see who these offers for Chris Stewart doing their games are coming from which supposedly led Ala to want to make him permanent football guy, too. Nice guy, but mediocre at beast pbp.

Paul Kennedy replaced John Forney from 83-88. Forney came back for one year then Eli. I feel that Kennedy really replaced Forney, not Eli.

Apparently Alabama chose not to renew Eli’s contract. I hate to hear that, but it’s not a lie to say that he had lost a step or two as a broadcaster, too.

That's really fricked up to just cut him loose after all that time.

If ture that is frickED UP. Didn't he have some health issues though? I would bet that it was a mutual decision at worst...can't imagine Alabama just up and letting him go.

They didn’t just “up and let him go” . They made an offer, he refused it, Then went scorched earth on his way out.

It's obvious, Eli doesn't want to go. And he's feeling good and says he is healthy again. If we had someone who even came close to his style and distinctive voice quality maybe I'm in. But this is worse than replacing John Forney with Paul Kennedy. Man, that was brutal growing up. We went from the world's greatest storyteller to some guy who sounded like he was better suited for high school football. And radio was so much more important back then.

If not for Wimp Sanderson recommending Eli Gold we could have been in for a long losing streak. BAMA should be ashamed.

The fact that the radio broadcast is not all that important today compared to 20 years ago is even more reason they should have allowed him to retire on his own terms. So what if he was off and only doing home games...let the new guy do the road and let the legend continue doing what he did for so long. Beloved just does not mean what it once did...

That makes way more sense than just kicking him to the curb. I hate Alabama with the heat of a million suns but nothing Alabama has ever been accused would be as cruel as to simply kick a legend to the curb because he lost a step doing a job that fans loved him doing and really isn't that important in the overall scheme. Him going scorched earth is a BAD look for a legend....

Georgia fans well remember going through a similar experience with the end of Larry Munson’s tenure. Although we didn’t non-tender him and cut him loose as Bama seems to have done with Eli Gold.

For the entirety of my experience as a UGA fan, some 51 years this season, Larry Munson never one time had the down and distance correct, he always gave opposing teams more yards than UGA, missed call after call...and it was the most glorious experience anyone who experienced it ever experienced. He only did home games for at least a few seasons. Had UGA ran him off or caused him to leave over a contract dispute Athens would have been burnt to the ground. Munson, however, was one of the last 2 or 3 truly legendary voices of college football when he retired. He was truly part and parcel of the dawg nation because most of us only knew UGA football because of him...there were only 80,000 tickets and a few games on TV a year...most of us listened raptly to the radio and Munson was our eyes. Gold, as good as he was and as big a part of Alabama football...came along toward the very tip of the tail end of that era. There is no way he could mean as much to Alabama as Munson did to UGA because he was not the eyes of the entire Alabama nation in an era where the radio broadcast as all most people could get to experience college football. Gold waas good, he is a legend but I doubt if even he would say that what he did was close to what Munson and Munson's peers did...
