State skunked Ole Miss in the first one, so the they named the trophy after the egg they laid.

A sports writer in the 70s coined the term.

The trophy is a football shape, but an old football that looks very much like an egg.

The trophy is shaped like an egg (a football), but which came first, the name or the trophy?
(The trophy.)

Back in the late 70’s neither team was bowl eligible and sports writer for The Clarion Ledger dubbed the game The Egg Bowl because that would be the only bowl game either team would play in that year.

Traditionally, it was called the Battle for the Golden Egg. The trophy was introduced in the 1920’s and was supposed to look like a football but instead looked more like an egg.
Hence that is where the Egg reference came in.

So there you go, you are now edjamucated.

It has morphed into "Egg Bowl"
A sportswriter originally called it "The Battle for the Golden Egg", as others have said, due to the shape of the trophy.

"Educate us" and "Mississiippi" traditionally hasn't been a very popular request.
