It’s nice, but it’s not safe. I know several people who have been mugged or carjacked in Belhaven.
When I lived at the junction of Woodland Hills and Fondren decades ago my little old lady neighbor got beat with a tire iron and robbed early one morning in her own kitchen. That was considered a “safe” area back then.
No place in Jackson proper is truly safe. I think Jackson Country Club is gated, so that may be relatively safe.

IN 1977 I think 4 of us went to Jackson for LSU-Ole Miss which was at 1:30pm. Someone gave us 4 tickets to the 7:30pm game and we saw Bama beat State.

I went to quite a few doubleheaders back then and it was Ole Miss - LSU at 1:30 and MSU - Bama at night…
Fun times…

A friend of mine’s son just spent 3 years at Belhaven…not safe. Also, why does HRV have an obsession with fencing around Belhaven?

No not safe, but for Jxn, one of the better areas. There is a sturdy fence around Millsaps with controlled access, but you can drive on and off Belhaven without going through a checkpoint (Belhaven in a better area than Millsaps - even though then are only a few miles apart).
BTW - Millsaps is in serious trouble enrollment wise, while Belhaven is holding serve or better.

Milsaps is in serious trouble. They forgot that you have to recruit students these days.
That your college can not just sit on their laurels. Friends of ours (married and both graduates of Milsaps) told me that Milsaps never sent the first letter to either of their children (zero communication).
Not surprisingly, their two children went to other colleges. Now they may have anyway but for the school not to recruit legacy students says a lot there.

Because with two private universities and one medical school within a few football fields of each other, you have to wonder what the plan is for them to jolt some "leaders" out of their slumber
does the State of Mississippi need to step in and take over?
Do you simply allow a historic southern city to become south Chicago?
Is there one state rep or state senator vowing to take considerable action?

I went to Millsaps in the 90s. We had a female student get abducted, assaulted, and tried to empty her cash account using her atm card. Created a campus wide system for escorting students around campus as a result.
Recently read that many cars that parked on the Murrah Campus that is across the street from Millsaps for the JSU game at Memorial Stadium when ESPN gameday was in town were broken into.

Alabama and Auburn had a handful. The best known was in 1968 when Alabama played LSU in the afternoon and Auburn played Tennessee that night. All four were ranked in the top 20. Alabama won, 16-7 and Auburn won, 28-14.
In 1973 there was one that amounted to a season opening Pacific "8" vs SEC double header. Auburn beat Oregon State 18-9 in the day game (huge fight late in the game that is on YouTube) and Alabama just destroyed California, 66-0 in the night game. Older Tide fans might remember that one as the game where Bear introduced the crowds to Danny Ridgeway. Ridgeway was inured but Bear had him run plays in from the sidelines to the huddle and then exit and return to the sidelines before the snap. An unusal practice that lasted all season.
Probably what will most certainly be the last one at Legion Field was in 1987. That was the year Alabama played all of its home games at Legion Field as Bryant-Denny was being renovated. The afternoon game had the Magic City Classic with Alabama State and Alabama A&M and the night cap was Miss State and Alabama.

Yep, they tried to keep it hush-hush but it was dozens and dozen’s possibly into the hundreds of vehicles that were vandalized during that Saturday.
Sad, because Jackson, at one time, was a great city and safe but over last 30+ years it is bad (not New Orleans bad but not far behind). And seemingly it continues to get worse. The leadership in Jackson is more concerned about their own power than they are the average citizen. Corruption is off the charts. One can only look at the water crisis to see that the leadership has failed across the board. Crime, infrastructure (streets are horrible), unable to supply water to residents and businesses (several who have closed recently or moved out of the city). Schools that are failing.
I have no idea how they recover as the citizens keep voting in the same people so that is not going to change either.
Look at the cities around Jackson. They are clean, good schools, crime is there but not an overwhelming problem, streets are well maintained, water supply is stable and drinkable. And when criminals committ crimes in one of these cities they RUN to the Jackson city limits so that they they escape the consequences of their criminality.
And Jackson welcomes them too. It is the criminals safe haven.

The honor colleges at State and OM have taken a bite out of Millsaps potential students.

so nevermind, did my own research... verdict: Belhaven neighborhood between Millsaps and Belhaven and south of the medical school is still safe and they can all take Canton road heading north (do not veer to the west of State Street) and get to good restaurants and Whole Foods and etc
No area in Jackson is safe. Not even next to the Jackson Country Club or Eastover. Hell Ridgeland is just as bad on the east side of I55. Clinton is bad also. You’re only areas to really be able to feel safe raising a family and have good public schools are going to be Madison, Gluckstadt, Flowood, and Brandon (Rez side or actual Brandon)
