My guess is that there is a whole lot of whistling past the graveyard among Aggie faithful as they speak of the wisdom in giving Jimbo this extension. They know it sets them up for ridicule if this year doesn’t work out like they are obviously expecting. Personally I don’t see it. Looking at last year, I truly believe they would have been outclassed had they made the playoffs. Look at their last game of the regular season (LSU). They feel like it was their best team in years and yet the LSU (which everyone acknowledges was pretty bad) stayed with them into the 4th quarter in College Station. Check the stats—they we’re almost identical. And yet they feel like that team did great things. I don’t see them winning in Baton Rouge anymore this year than they have done in years past (0). I’m not picking on them, I just think they’re not being realistic.
We’ll see.

LSU still had the 6th most talented team in the country plus it being a rivalry game.

No doubt to your points. I just wouldn’t start feeling like A&M is some sort of “heir apparent” to the SEC west without understanding LSU will always have
something to say about it. And of course Alabama. Until A&M can take both in one year and not stub their toe somewhere else, I believe expectations should be tempered. I think that’s why a lot of folks outside of College Station are critical of the Jimbo contract extension when it seems to be unwarranted and more importantly, unnecessary.

Is it unnecessary? A&M is poised on the brink of being seriously competitive, and not a flash in the pan either. The recruiting rivals have been selling that Fisher and Elko will not be here next year

Why not just stick a fork in that narrative? And once again, it's our money - we can spend it as we wish. The board approved it

I don’t really care how much he’s making per year. The market is out of control at this point. But I don’t understand the point or need to keep him on a 10 year rolling contract. He still had 7 years remaining on his current deal. What was the need to add 3 more years?

Might be protection from LSU. If Ogre has another collapse like last season they'll fire Ogre, and I imagine one of their first phone calls will be to Jimbo.

This is the greatest “accomplishment” you’ve seen A&M Football achieve in your lifetime. How sad.

Oh I don’t disagree with that at all. LSU is ahead of A&M in the pecking order, and a little 2-1 stretch for Jimbo doesn’t change that. The only thing that can change that is a natty, or consistently beating LSU for several more years (not every game obviously but the lion’s share). We can debate the possibility of either but yes, we are still 3rd in the pecking order at present. I mean, not this year specifically, but you get my point.

Sumlin got a raise after his first year going 11-2, beating #1 Alabama and kicking the shite out of OU in the Cotton Bowl finishing 5th in the AP poll.

This is false. His raise and extension happened after year 2 when he was shopping himself around to USC and the Eagles because he knew Manziel and Evans were leaving...and because Eric Hyman was a fricking moron.

Why wouldn't Jimbo be there?
