as a coach?

I'm as caught up in GrudenMania as any non-Vol could be. The whole soap opera is fascinating.

But why do we think Gruden can be successful in college football?

The thought is: Recruiting will be good because Gruden is a household name due to TV so kids will want to play for him because they know him from MNF (and they'll want to play for a super bowl winner)
Coaching: It's assumed he'll do well with coaching since he won a super bowl, and built the raiders before going to TB

His last recruiting class was like 1990-ish.

No chance he could figure out how to coach college football imo. He would be routinely outwitted by the likes of Will Muschamp.

He was the Pacific Tigers Tight Ends Coach in 1989 in Stockton California. Grad assist at Tennessee for a year and Passing Coordinator for some school in Missouri.

But I guess the general answer to your question is he knows football and had some success in the NFL which is generally considered harder than college? I don't know if he'd be good or bad but its fun watching the Grumors.

I think the limited amount of coaching instruction time in college combined with the seemingly unlimited amount of time that needs to be devoted to recruiting, will not fit well with Gruden's style.

Still an upgrade from Lyle.

Rex Ryan is a more polished college coach.

So you're saying that y'all are fine paying someone $6 million a year to learn on the job?

shite I'll do that for much less.

This is the best point, I guess.

It was just funny the other day when the Chip Kelly rumors were flying : Everybody knew exactly what to expect with a Chip Kelly team. Nobody has a clue what Gruden would do.

I don't think he's that great but my opinion is that if he does take a college gig he will go all in. He will be making big bucks, will have recruits interest and has connections in football. He also has ties or history in all the best producing states.

Yeah, I don't think he has ever even coached. I think he will be alright based on his time in the MNF booth.
