I don't care enough about this to do the rest of Chavis's seasons, but I'd be willing to bet they all have a similar linear fit. What does NFL performance have to do with any of it? LSU's offense in 2013 was good, not great.

I know they don't teach a lot of math in Louisiana but there is a thing called logarithms that can be used to make sense of a chart that is widely scattered.

Frankly, I'd go with the pat answer first and foremost: yes, Chavis (and pretty much any DC) needs the offense to cooperate with his defensive scheme. But the question isn't what Chavis needs, it's what TAMU needs. Before we worry about meshing the two, TAMU needs someone to impose discipline on their defensive corp and institute a playbook that takes advantage of the sorts of players TAMU has on D right now. Their defense has frequently looked pretty lost over the last three season (can't attest to anything before that) because their ability to read the offenses and get to their assignments seemed virtually nil. Whether that's because they weren't learning or because they weren't disciplined, I couldn't say, but those two are Chavis' job in his first couple seasons. After that, once he has recruits he picked, then they'll have to have serious discussions about how they mesh with TAMU's wide-open offense.
