If you want to troll, or if you get banned you make up another identity to continue posting on the board.
Someone might do it if their original identity has not been banned so he can troll other fan bases without making his original identity a pariah.
If a poster's original identity is banned, a poster might create a new identity to continue posting on the board while his original identity is banned.

Just a heads up: Most posters on these boards are obsessed with trying to figure out “alters” and act like all newbies are really someone else that used to post. They won’t change their mind under any circumstances. It’s clearly obsessive. They need to quit following the herd and actually think independently. But hey, to each his own.

I didn't think so. People that call somebody an alter are usually trolling them. Every once in awhile you can spot an alter and "out" them.
