Coaching NFL is way harder than coaching college so i would say yes.

Mike Sherman had a better winning percentage in the pros than he did at A&M. He also had a better winning percentage than jon gruden.

I think John Gruden could beat just about anybody on any given day. I bet he would be a hell of a recruiter. Seems like the salesman type. Just wonder how long before he'd get sick of it and jump back to the NFL.

No, Gruden would definitely would be able to recruit. He has the personality and magneticism to be a monster on the recruiting trail.

Lee Corso has personality and magnetism as well. Theres a difference between owning a tv set and flying all over the country convincing moms that they can take care of their son for four years. Recruiting is grueling. Not saying Gruden wouldnt be able to do it but lots of analysts used to be coaches. Its much easier to keep your personality flying to 16 MNF games a year than hundreds of kid's high schools and homes.

Gruden could walk into any home in America after his stint on ESPN and hand pick a team of 5 star athletes....show them the 40 million dollar football operations facility that will have its grand opening in August of 2013 and there you have it....top 3 recruiting classes every year and the balance of power in football in the SEC shifts from Tuscaloosa to Fayetteville with Baton Rouge coming in a distant third

I think if all Jon Gruden had to do was coach, then Arkansas would be crazy not to hire him. However, I do not see this guy putting up with the nonsense that is the SEC football fan. Nor do I see him being willing and able to put up with the absolute grind of recruiting, which is 24/7/365 these days.

He'll be in trouble with the NCAA in no time for some minor violation, then turn it into a major by calling it stupid.

Chuckie does not suffer fools well.

Dude, put the crack pipe down. You are still Arkansas. Nobody wants to go to Fayettenam.

As Robot Santa said, Gruden's never been good at developing young players. You need to be able to do that to be successful in college.

You don't have to be a great "talent developer" as the head coach if you hire the right assistants. Why the frick would Gruden be relied upon, for instance, to work 1-on-1 with fullbacks? Or tight ends? Or QBs? They have position coaches. You guys think Les Miles or Nick Saban are singularly responsible for Rueben Randle (haha) or Mark Barron?

It's not 1 fricking coach harnessing the potential for all 85 guys on scholarship.

Gruden would have some question marks, but he would also have a ridiculously high ceiling for what he could accomplish. As far as coaching goes, he's considerably better than almost all college coaches, period. If he was able to evaluate talent and put together a good staff, I have pretty much no doubt he would be a championship coach.

Well, he is such demand in the NFL...I mean it's not like he hasn't had a head coaching job in several years...

Oh wait...

College Football is more about talent than it is coaching.

I could take an Alabama or LSU roster and win most of the games on their schedule... and I have no experience in coaching. Well other than NCAA on xbox of course.

This is fact that cannot be argued against. Also, I'm not saying Gruden would dominate, but if Petrino could manage slight success in a time where the SEC West has been the toughest it has ever been, then Gruden would probably be able to handle his own.

Gruden would be able to hold his own but don't try to say that Arky ever finished ahead of Bama under Petrino. 2010 was a 3 way tie for 2nd. Petrino never could beat Saban but I do believe Gruden would at least make the games competitive in Tuscaloosa.

Honestly, Gruden is a hell of a coach and if Arky lucked up and got him, he would do alot better job than Petrino IMO.

Again, is that why he hasn't coached in several years?

I give him credit for that, although a lot of people think he won that off the previous coach's work.

Refresh my memory, was he let go at Tampa? If he's so great, why wasn't he immediately picked up by another team?

I think he would bring a lot of excitement to the Hogs, but, I don't think he wants to work that hard.

He has connections to Tennessee and he didn't take that job when it was open. Let's be honest, Tennessee would be considered a higher level program than Arkansas.
