Reminiscent of the basketball player... Hank Gathers was it?
Athletes sometimes have a larger heart, and it can be difficult to tell whether its a problem
My prayers to the family.

I could be wrong, but I have heard that the heart is just like any other muscle and get larger, and tends to happen more to athletes due to constant physical exertion they are under.
I think if the doctors catch it early they can give beta blockers to stop the enlarging process.

As I suspected... hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It's the leading cause of sudden death in young, otherwise healthy athletes, and often has no symptoms. Of course, most people with training-induced heart enlargement never have any problems and certainly don't die from it, and it subsides with detraining.
It's just one of those freak occurrences. Really sad. Stuff like this makes me feel fragile.

We as humans are very fragile.
This is why I have never really understood those who smoke, do drugs, drink a lot, and eat fast food for every meal.
So many people just want to live in the moment and think nothing will ever come of it.
This is a sad reminder that even the healthy, most in shape person in the world can have a sudden health issue.

Me either, but then again a lot of them think, "I could die tomorrow of something like an enlarged heart so I might as well go ahead and do whatever I want."

Say what you will about Arkansas fans, but none of us have lacked the class it requires to stoop THIS low.
You, child, need to grow the frick up.

Well, as you said, even those who are in the best shape aren't invulnerable. A huge part of being alive is living in the moment... what else is life but a series of moments? You've got to enjoy yourself, but within reason.
But I agree in principle--I don't understand people who blatantly abuse and neglect their bodies. I'm guessing that most are either ignorant or in denial.

When I heard heart I immediately thought dilated cardiomyopathy (which is the enlarged heart mentioned in the OP) or a hypoplastic coronary artery. They say it is not cost effective to do echo-cardioagraphy for all athletes but if it could save a few lives each year with the enlarged heart, it's cost effective to me.
