I think UT's problem this season is all the distractions with pearl. You yourself know that pearl is a great coach. I expect a huge turnaround next year. He has recruited some great talent.
I actually agree with most of this, but I don't see Pearl being here next year.

Are you more satisfied with the half court style this season as opposed to the all out press Pearl featured a few years back ?

Sure, the committee takes in to account the whole body of work. They also look at how a team finishes the season. They will not hold the beginning of the season against them if they have 12-13 SEC wins. Bama is in right now, no question.

Well, I just don't see the "no question" part of that. It would be different if Bama had a couple of great OOC wins to counter the crappy SEC West schedule boost. However, I guess I have just been watching a team all season that I am not sure deserves an invite but which has more pros in its favor than Bama, especially if they beat Bama on the road. They very well might both get in. I am not an expert on what else is out there nationally. IF they do both get in, i do think it may come at the expense of UT, unless the rest of the country is as average as the SEC is this year.

I don't see either team winning the SEC tourney though.

Huge mistake if it happens imo.

I want to see the half court style. To make nice tourney runs, it's the way to go.

In theory yes. Last season I saw execution in half-court sets that I haven't seen this year. That said, I know the staff can win with half-court stuff after last year. And that's what it takes in the Tourney. We were fun to watch early in Pearl's tenure and SEC teams had more problems with us but in the 'AAs we weren't getting it done. The Louisville Sweet 16 game in 08 was what I think made Pearl go away from the press for good.

The suspension won't really make retaining him a possibility, IMO. That will be two years without off campus recruiting and we'll have an an interim coach for a year. When he comes back, I think it could be difficult for him to recruit top players.

We are near locks for these two in 2012. Even without Pearl recruiting them off-campus they are ours in all likelihood.

Gotfired ran it & we made it to the elite eight, but blew his load most of the other years.

Ark(40 minutes O' hell) & UK (pitino) during the early 90's, won Titles using the full court presses/traps.

I could be wrong, but I was pretty sure Arkansas' title team was more defensive.

Pearl's most successful tournament run came with a team that didn't press.

You also had a veteran team who knew how to play team basketball. The half court style is simply not working and something needs to change. THe offense looks completely lost and there are few transition baskets.

Even though the team last year was the most "successful" as far as advancement, it wasn't his best team, IMO. I'd put that team 3rd behing the teams that lost to Ohio St and Lousiville.

You've got to have elite athletes to do that who buy in if you want to win big time.

Goins-would be fine pressing
Hopson-would be great athletically pressing, but doesn't have the mindset to do it
Tatum-too slow defensively
Harris-would probably work as the deep man
Williams-too slow and not quick enough

Pettway and crew were responsible for that run, not Gottfried. That run only made him lazy and coach less than he did before.

What's your point? You're saying his better teams with the other style fell earlier in the tournament. There's a reason for that.

His switching away from the press really makes me want to keep him more, but I just don't think it will work out well if we do.

I like what we do with the press, its not 40 minutes of hell, we don't press all the time and we don't have to. We play good half court defense too. I think if you press all the time you'll run into trouble in the tournament but I don't see why you can't do some of it.

No, if you remember, he stopped after the suspensions last year. He went to the half court sets b/c of the lack of depth for that short time and never went back. I don't know, I just liked the style. Color me different, but it's just a matter of opinion.

Last year's team early in the season with Tyler Smith, Chism, Prince, Maze, and Hopson was not pressing at all.
