I'm guessing you since you think MISSOURI breakfast joints serve canned biscuits and canned gravy.

Where in the frick are you eating?

BTW, Grits are fricking awful and sweet tea is horrible as well.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Grits are God's gift to hungry gentlemen. Sweet tea was sent from heaven to quench the thirst of said gentlemen. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Help please.

I think you were saying I think Missouri breakfast joints serve canned biscuits and canned gravy.

If so, yes and no. Most restaurants use frozen biscuits from a box and not a can. Very few make their own biscuits. I'm assuming a hipster place does this. I would bet they are using canned gravy as well as most restaurants don't make their own gravy either. Sadly, even in the South, it's hard to find fresh B and G.

I think most folks have no idea what they are talking about!

What we call sweet tea today is NOT real sweet tea.

In the old days in the south it was improper for ladies to drink. In oder to get around this, asking for a sweet tea meant you wanted bourbon (as the color would pass for the color of tea).

Just like Irish coffee is more "Irish" than coffee.

So as far as the best local cuisine, how about the Top 5 hole in the wall mom and pop joints?

Hmm, that's a fun one. For me personally it'd go

1. Booches. Been there since 1884. Best cheeseburgers I've ever had. Served on wax paper, no fries just chips, everything is no frills and unchanged for decades upon decades.

2. Shotgun Pete's BBQ Shack. Not every Mizzou person will be on board with this, but I like KC barbecue and this former food truck turned hole in the wall restaurant does it right IMHO.

3. Ms. Kim's Fish & Chicken Shack. Best fried chicken in town, catfish, po boys, frog legs....yeah. In terms of the Southern wheelhouse that you have in mind, this is the one.

4. C.J.'s wings. Oh yeah.

5. Broadway Diner. Old, old, old, old school tiny diner, late night drunk food. The "Stretch"...hash browns topped with scrambled eggs, chili, cheddar cheese, green peppers and onions.

These are the places I seek out in a new town. Book marking this just in case. They sound wonderful.

NO FRIES, CHEEPS!

You had insinuated earlier than canned Bs and Gs were simply a Yankee affliction.

I can only offer up that you are frequenting the wrong spots. There is a spot down the road a bit from me that makes a stuffed biscuits and gravy that is pure heaven.

Of course I did. That's a pretty standard exchange for us. Yankees this. You are a yankee that. Nuh uh. You are the Yankees you have winter coats and didn't secede.

If you find a place that makes their own gravy and biscuits (I can't do B and G with a straight face) then let them know how much you appreciate it. It's getting rare because good gravy and biscuits is an art.

I went last October to the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago for the first time - the restaurant that that old SNL skit is based on.

Listen when I say, Booches burgers are FAR FAR AND AWAY better than that place. I was sorely disappointed. Billy Goat Tavern wins on history what with the Cubs curse and all, but Booches has better burgers.

Here is a pretty good first timers review from back in our Big 12 days of what a traveling college football fan thought about Booches (third paragraph down).

And as the article reminds me, its actually been there since 1884 not 1896. Whoops.

Not necessarily, could just be old.

Place I had lunch today is old school
Burger
Chips
Salad (leaf of lettuce, cottage cheese, and slice of peach on top)

Ha! That's not a standard exchange with me! I would never deny being a Yankee and have no idea why any of you think it's an insult.

I know of several places that make scratch biscuits and homemade gravy. Breakfast is the best meal of the day

Stag beer has me a bit concerned but I'd love to try it and the burgers.

Like I say above, the Billy Goat Tavern itself actually struck me this way when I went there. The place just oozes history and all the stuff on the walls is amazing, but the burgers...eh.

USA Today named Booches one of the top ten burgers in America in an article. So its gotten some run for being good burgers rather than just a historic joint.
