Cock fight: Steve Spurrier reaches breaking point with local columnist (audio)

quote:

Spurrier said he doesn't have to put up with the ongoing criticism, and that he would "head to the beach" rather than continue to put up with Morris.

What's the deal with this?

Under Pressure playing in my head right now. What is it with SClite coaches? I picture Stevie and Lou sharing a room at Bristol ward.

It all has to do with Ron Morris of The State newspaper. He has some vendetta against Spurrier. He started writing articles last year that Spurrier stole Bruce Ellington from Darren Horn and the basketball team which help lead to Horn being fired and that Spurrier should be ashamed of himself. Then he has had several articles attacking Spurrier's personality recently. It reached an all time high when Shaw got hurt and Spurrier announced he would play against Missouri...he wrote an article saying Spurrier would do whatever it took to win and didnt care about his players. Mentioned that Shaw was in so much pain he couldnt walk and was crawling and rolling around campus (he forgot to mention that Shaw was cleared by team doctors and not Spurrier). Then lastly, he mentioned the other day that Spurrier is no different than JoePa and he wouldnt be surprised if Penn State type allegations has happened under the HBC's watch. Said Spurrier is so power hungry he will turn an eye to anything and will get a player killed if it means a win.

Ron Morris is a sports analyst with The State newspaper in Columbia. He hates Spurrier and writes unrelentingly negative columns about him. Last year he falsely accused Spurrier of "poaching" Bruce Ellington from the basketball team. This year he accused Spurrier if putting winning over player safety by letting Connor Shaw play with a shoulder fracture. When SOS refused to take questions after that piece ran, Morris went on national radio and compared Spurrier's situation to Penn State.

Spurrier has had enough of Morris' lies, exaggerations and falsehoods. Morris has an agenda and Spurrier is not going to tolerate it anymore.

Local antagonist Shock Jock reporter ran his mouth for over a year, made up a lie about a situation with our players, was disproven but still wouldn't retract his comments (about Bruce Ellinginton), so Spurrier says he's not talking to the guy or around the guy anymore.

The guy then goes on Bill King and compares Spurrier to Paterno.

Our AD, University President, and Board of Trustees got pissed, ban alcohol at tailgating (j/k, F.U. Kentucky), and are now getting involved. The reporter is now going to be reassigned, we believe. He was already ordered to apologize for making that comparison.

I'm a huge Spurrier fan. He's losing it. Must be the water.

Steve is O genius, why go on D? With the media for crying out loud. He used to use them like sock puppets in g'ville.

Spurrier is awesome.
Ron Morris is a dipshit.
That sums it up.

Audio has been pulled. Anyone have a link to it elsewhere, or perhaps a transcript?

Very good explanation.

He didn't say anything remotely close to that.

In discussing Spurrier's refusal to take questions at two consecutive press conferences, and last year's situation where he refused to talk to reporters with Morris in the room, Morris said Spurrier was acting like he was bigger than the university, and that's the kind of behavior that leads to situations like Penn State (presumably, because nobody could dispute Paterno). No way did he even come close to suggesting that the Penn State allegations had happened under Spurrier's watch.
