I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Butch Jones will actually be allowed to coach a position.

Diversity. We needed a lesbian on field.

Hopefully Butch is a better assistant than he is a head coach.

Pruitt didn't have a committable offer.

I hope he is. We got torched too many times last seadon. We need to have coaches who can tighten them up.

I hope he fails against us. Otherwise, I think he's a fine coach (well, except I do think he's terrible at special teams but y'all already have your own issues there so that's a wash).

If he can get our kickers to at least make extra point kicks I'd say he is an upgrade!

Our punters and kickers are almost always good and our punter was freaking amazing but our STs in general took a big step back with him - we had issues lining up for punts, got stupid arse penalties, and were just generally a mess. If Saban was smart he'd put CBJ on Special Teams (it's the one position where he really is damn good at coaching).

That said, Tennessee is the undisputed 'Punter U' and has been for ages so we benefit from that in recruiting. Kickers and Punters want to come here and we've generally had a lot of great ones. Bama's kicking woes absolutely astound me.

He's not just a recruiter. The guy is one hell of a fundamental football coach. A Mickey Andrews type. I can maybe see where this is going. Face it, Bama had the one year fall off in their recruiting while they had some guys taking better jobs plus others picked it up with these young guys out there chasing after young guys so Saban went that route. And the team paid a price late in the year.

Lots of rumors @ coach change time, lots of them. We'll see who lands where. Like you said chatter.

I swear to God coaching changes in the SEC is the equivalent of a swinger's convention with the way we all swap.

IIRC, Kelly was taken off the recruiting trail when Tee was hired. He's had a ton of offers this offseason. It would make sense that he turned down Maryland if he was in talks with Bama although if it's less than DC I'm not sure why he wouldn't have just taken the Maryland job.
He's obviously building his resume while learning from the best...smart guy.

It's chatter right now from a coach I know. I hope it pans ouy. Guy is a good recruiter.

Because it’s in recruiting that Bama was hurting in this year and the reason they got curb stomped by Clemson.

Alright then.....

Official per Volquest

quote:

Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt has lost assistant coach Charles Kelly to Alabama. The veteran secondary coach is leaving Rocky Top to coach the secondary for the Tide with sources telling Volquest that Kelly could be in line to for a bigger title once Nick Saban finalizes the rest of his staff.

Sources say the deal is just under 1 million dollars per year.

Kelly came to Tennessee a season ago after five seasons at Florida State in which the last four he served as the defensive coordinator in Tallahassee. With the Vols in 2018, Kelly worked as the safeties coach and special teams coordinator.

With Kelly’s departure, Pruitt is now down to 10 full-time assistant coaches on his staff after adding former Vol Tee Martin earlier this week. Responsibilities for the staff have not been released.

Last season, Tennessee had five assistants on each side of the ball.

Kelly is the second on the field coach to leave from Pruitt’s inaugural staff as Tyson Helton left to be the head coach at Western Kentucky. Earlier this week, John Lily, who was an assistant to Pruitt in an off the field role, accepted the tight ends position with the Cleveland Browns. Both Lily and Kelly played key roles in Tennessee’s special team units this past season.
