I think there was enough back and forth that Auburn thought he was the guy and Lane thought he was going to Auburn. Something happened at the last minute that gave him cold feet. There is plenty of room for interpretation on that.

I believe that to be the case. I wonder if that jackass breaking the story so soon queered the deal?

I think it was Juice or one of the kids not wanting to go to A u B u R n. Ewwwww was the reaction to him suggesting it.

Supposedly things are also moving on from Freeze, although he is said to still be a candidate. Johnson may be the next on the list although the article indicates Swinney is still in the race.

I get what you are saying but no school will ever admit they didn't hire their first choice. No offer is ever offered unless terms are agreed before hand. So the only way to get the actual story is to find trusted sources and piece the puzzle together.

The problem there is there is no such thing has trusted sources on these things. Pete Thamell is a prime example. He has been one of the main characters pushing “according to sources” stories first about Lane then claiming Freeze was about to be hired. People lapped up every word he tweeted or said despite the fact this clown has made a career out of being wrong, especially wrong on matters concerning Auburn. Believing anything Thamell says an out Auburn is akin to believing Fauci on anything to do with COVID.

The stuff over the last week doesn't fit the narrative that Lane was trying to get a pay raise. He had the extension from OM before the Arkansas game and before the leaks. I think there was enough back and forth that Auburn thought he was the guy and Lane thought he was going to Auburn. Something happened at the last minute that gave him cold feet. There is plenty of room for interpretation on that.

This is level headed take on the matter. It’s obvious there was interest in Kiffin on the Auburn side, and it’s obvious Kiffin was interested in the Auburn job. Does that mean it went all the way to an offer being made or rejected? No it doesn’t. We don’t know how far the talks went. And unless Kiffin or Cohen come out and give the details of the talks, we’ll never know.

As for Freeze, we have no idea if that story has even a crib of truth. For all we know Auburn isn’t even interested in him.

The bottom line is, no matter what “according to sources” stories come out, only a gullible fool would believe any of them. We’ve seen this story play out over and over the same way to keep falling for it everytime.

This is my un sourced take from following it as close as anyone over the last 3 weeks.

I think old Lane takes the job and doesn't think twice. But I think he has gone through some personal growth since his time in Oxford. He doesn't drink as much (but you can't tell me he wasn't drinking last Monday night). He hasn't been around his kids in years. His daughter has plugged into Oxford High School to the point Lane was going to pep rallies and having girls nights at his house with her friend group. She is going to OM to be close to Lane. Knox is rumored to be coming to OHS next year to be close to Lane.

I think he thought it was a good move professionally but also had some push back from his kids that they were comfortable in Oxford and made a point to be happy and be with him, then he decides he is going to up and move again. So he had a professional vs family discussion in his brain that I think he really struggled with. And at the last minute he decided to just stay put for at least another year. For the first time in a long time he would have both kids in the same city as him.

Pretty wild that Auburn seems to be the only school that wants to hire a guy that was fired from his last job because of hookers and crippling NCAA probation.

No. I just have little patience for ignorance. And the AU coaching story has been overrun with ignorance since the start. It’s like people on here have never seen a coaching search before. The number one rule of coaching searches is believe nothing until the new coach is announced. Anyone who knows anything about coaching searches, especially in the SEC where Sexton represents just about everyone, is he will use these coaching searches to get his clients more money which in turn makes him more money. He does this literally every time a job comes open in the SEC.

No, Auburn’s going to keep Caddy on Hugh’s staff and announce it to the world in hopes it keeps fans from jumping off a cliff.
