Technically they are still winners because they have the game.
You know how much viewership they’re gonna lose by having it on at 2:30 instead of prime time?

This is a colossal frickup on their part.

The LSU-Florida game given to ESPN may have been the first “payment” of the deal.
This was my original thought as well. I figured they give them that game, LSU vs Auburn and maybe Bama vs Georgia in 2020. But LSU vs AU is on at 2:30

Here is what happened in 2011. Many forget that this was a 3:30 game just 2 weeks before kickoff. If both teams are undefeated expect something similar.

Has this game not been a night game for the past 8 years or am I dumb? Why would it be different this year, considering both teams will be top 5?

Because CBS chose georgia / Notre dame

Correct, but why wouldn't CBS still chose Florida/LSU and put it at 2:30? CBS still has first pick to what game it wants each week.

The agreement between CBS and ESPN is that CBS gets one SEC prime time game a year. This year CBS chose GA v. Notre Dame. So technically they've used up their prime time slot. However, just like in 2011 they can basically buy the slot from ESPN which would more than likely would include "future scheduling considerations for next season" (or this season, see below). In 2011 both the AL-Florida game and the AL-LSU game were in prime time on CBS.

Some believe that ESPN getting the FL-LSU game in prime time was down payment that would allow CBS to move the AL-LSU game to prime time Nov. 9. I think this could be true because I can't think of another reason why CBS would not have chosen that game other than stupidity. The LSU - MSU game this week is another head-scratcher.

ESPN's prime time slot is money. In fact, I wish we didn't play a single game on CBS.

So you want to cut viewership in half?

Yeah very strange honestly. I thought for sure that was part of the deal to move it to prime time.

Like I said I thought cbs would give them LSU vs Florida, LSU vs Auburn and next year give them Bama vs Georgia for it.

If CBS let’s it ride and it’s at 2:30 I would be livid if I was someone who paid for commercial time during the game. Gonna miss out on tens of millions of eyes

You think people would stop watching SEC games if it went to ESPN or Fox? Please explain the logic.

If SEC games were on Fox that would be one thing but if they were only on ESPN yes viewership would take a massive hit. Cable channels can’t compete with OTA channels when it comes to ratings. Why do you think ESPN refuses to release the ratings for SECN?

Also, barring a massive swing in Disney’s fortunes, the SEC will never be on Fox. Ever. ESPN has too much invested to let that happen. Perhaps they could end up on ABC once the CBS desk is over but Fox is a non starter.
