Whatever # you come up with will be more than LSU so have at it. If the # is 8, I'll be more than happy to roll with that.

Good point. That claim causes you to look more closely at the others and wonder what else they are claiming that isn't right. If it were not for 1941, I probably wouldn't think much of the auspicious nature of the others.
1978 is strange too, because they got beat by USC and still claim the title over them. USC also had 1 loss.
If the AP or Coaches Poll voted them number 1, it's 100% legitimate to me. It's just 1941 that stands out so bad.
Seriously, if I hear a Bama fan claim they have won 12 national titles, I'll acknowledge the greatness of their football program and its history. When I hear one claim 13, it makes me think they're the kind of person who calls in to Finebaum and bitches at Auburn fans.

I'm not comparing. I know that it is more. I just want to know what the number actually is.

I really think the 1941 title is the cause for much ridicule. That claimed 'title' alone almost makes it hard to take the 4 pre-poll era titles seriously, even though those aren't really bad claims at all.
I agree. We have 8 poll era championships, and of the 5 earlier championships we claim, 4 of them were undefeated Rose Bowl winners. The remaining one is 1941, and I wish we would just quit claiming it. Maybe if/when we win the next one, they can just phase 1941 out and keep the total number the same. Maybe no one will notice.

Solid post man. Sound the alarm we have found a rational bama fan

Most Bama fans agree 1941 is bullshite. Problem is that the school claims it. It's hard for fans to say "12" when the school says "13". Fans go with it just for the sake of convenience IMO.

Most fans? Or just fans that actually took the time to look at those seasons?
It seems to me (and I could be wrong), that most fans just roll with the number 13 and don't even think about it.

8 at minimum, 12 at most.
If you only recognize major poll titles (API, UPI, Coaches/BCS) Bama has 8. If you recognize that football existed before the AP poll, Bama has 4 more from undefeated Rose Bowl teams, from the era when the Rose was the defacto NC game.
And then there is 1941, which hardly any of us think is legit.
Please remember this answer the next time you get the urge to start yet another thread about Bama's past.

I trade 41 for 45, Army was over rated that year and got the whole war bias.

I would say most fans. In case you haven't noticed, Bama fans are kinda into our own history.

How can you even begin to think this? Were you alive to watch the games?

They already had the precedent set after claiming '64 a year they lost to a Texas team the undefeated Arkansas team stomped.

I agree with this. Tennessee only has 2 AP/Coaches titles, but I refuse to not count 1938 or 1950. I don't know much about 1940. I wouldn't be upset about dropping 1967, unless someone can tell me that the Litkenhous System was actually an important selector at that point in time.

Theres nothing wrong with 64 or 78.
Alabama owns both the AP and UPI (now Coaches) for 64.
Alabama, ranked #2, beat PSU, ranked #1, in the 79 Sugar Bowl. Usually when #2 beats #1 in the final game they move up.
