Nice summary so far from Sports Nation:
LINK
Cecil Newton has acknowledged that he had several phone conversations with Rogers prior to his son's visit with Miss State in late 2009. To my knowledge, Cecil has only denied that Rogers asked for money on his behalf. I don't believe Cecil has denied that Rogers was representing his son or working with his son to help him find the right school.
The fact that Rogers promotes himself as someone who specializes in helping "players who are transferring and players who have been kicked out of school" makes it highly likely that he approached Cecil and Cam for that reason. Cecil could make this a lot easier if he just said "Kenny Rogers did not represent us in any way, shape or form." Instead, Cecil has denied that Rogers asked for money on his behalf -- leaving completely open the possibility that Rogers was speaking to colleges with the consent of the Newtons.

SB Nation's Roll Bama Roll picks through the additional information in the New York Times regarding the Cam Newton investigation:
Pete Thamel of the New York Times has his latest column up, and it includes at least four new (at least to my knowledge) pieces of information regarding the investigation: (1) John Bond makes the explicit allegation that Kenny Rogers made the representation to him that he represented the Newton camp; (2) court documents show that Kenny Rogers has financial ties to NFL agent Ian Greengross via a shared bank account; (3) Newton's father, in addition to being a preacher, also owns a construction company; (4) Roger's company specializes in players who are transferring and players who have been kicked out of school.
It's this fourth piece of information that may end up causing Cam Newton the most problems. The function of Rogers' firm plus the previously-acknowledged relationship between Cecil Newton and Rogers is going to reek of improper agent contact to even the casual observer.

quote:Because if we would have landed Newton the nwe would have kept our mouth shut and also got him for free. Since Cecil sold his soul and decided for Cam instead of letting Cam make his own choice then we felt the need to do the right thing. Now we all know why Cecil really wanted Cam to go to Auburn. God can't be happy with a pastor that pimps his own son.
Just seems strange to me that if Mullen/MSU AD felt that Newton was damaged goods they would continue to recruit him.

Do any of you ever remember the media flipping out ilke this, with as little info as they have?
Be fair, dude.
Let's provide some context.
Earlier this year, U$C and Reggie Bush were stripped of their respective crystal football and Heisman Trophy.
Auburn is currently #2 in the BCS, in the hunt for a title, and they have the leading Heisman candidate as their QB.
Now, I can't imagine why the media would be flipping out.

quote:Tainted but necessarily ineligible. Just knowing an agent does not make you ineligible. Granted, it would have been a slippery slope for MSU had Cam decided to go to State but they probably knew he wasn't coming once they recognized he would have to be purchased.
If that is correct, and any connection to Rogers wuld make Newton inelligible to play, why did MSU continue to recruit him?

LSUFreek has video of Christmas 2009 at the Newton household. You can't make this shite up.

Im a little confused... is the joint bank acount the official connection to the agent? I dont think Rogers would be considered an agent otherwise, right?

Why is it so easy to assume Cecil Newton did something wrong? Is it because of the reputation "preachers" and "bishops" have gotten lately for rather shady financial dealings? Too many love offerings going towards the reverend's new caddy?

Those of us from South Louisiana don't have any trouble floating the idea that preachers, bishops or priests would lie or cover things up.
The headmaster at my middle school in Baton Rouge ended up being booted for embezzlement.
My sisters' alma mater in Baton Rouge was renamed after the archbishop it was named for (long since dead) was accused of molesting little boys.
And then there's Jimmy Swaggart...
So yeah, it's not hard to believe that a man of faith would cover something up or lie. Happens all the time! It's not a Catholic or Protestant thing... happens everywhere in all states and all denominations...

If this is true Auburn will get the death penalty
2nd time they have been caught paying players.
BUT FOR NEWTON AU WOULD NOT HAVE BEATEN LSU!

Tony Barnhart said on a radio show today that AU refused to give money for Cam and this impressed Cecil and he thus steered his son to AU.
Yesterday it was reported that Cecil knew nothing about money in the ordeal.
Which is it? And if AU was confronted with a decision to pay for a player, and I don't give a shite if it was some phony agent or not, WHY did AU not go to the NCAA about Kenny Rogers?
AU is in deep doo-doo.

Its starting to sound like it.
Cam wont be the only one going if this is true. Coaching staff and AD staff will be hitting the trail too.
