It's not about the talent it's more about Lane Kiffin. I don't trust him for lack of a better phrase? Saban hiring him reminds me of Tubs hiring Franklin. It just seems like a highly combustible match

It's possible that it may not work out. Then Saban gives Kiffin the boot after one year. Saban has no loyalty to assistants if they don't produce. I just don't think it's as big of a deal as most posters are making it out to be. Kiff knows that this is the end of the road. Either he produces here or he may never get another opportunity. I think he will appreciate that Saban is giving him a second chance and he will make the most of it.

You mean the same teams don't win the national title every year? Interesting.

Saban and Cal still have a long ways to fall before being classified "Auburn."

Saban was never invincible. Tubbs has a winning record against him. He doesn't fare well against coaches that win by coaching and not just relying on talent. Bret even cleaned up in the Big 10. But that's why he has so much trouble with LSU. You don't go from one great year at MSU and one NC at LSU to falling on your arse where coaching matters most (NFL) and then a NC contenders every year at Bama when you suddenly have more talent than everyone without coincidence. He couldn't even beat ULM when the team relied on his coaching most. Even Chizik managed to beat them on a down year and on one of ULM's greatest years.

Its the whole reason he hired Kiffen. If their QB sucks and they lose he can blame it on LK and fire him. Instead of admitting he has failed at getting that extra talent he needs to win.

Spot on with saban. I have said since he was hired he is not a great gameday coach. Pretty average.

Saban is a program builder who gets superior talent, then coaches a conservative basic style on offense with a fundamentally sound defense.

Couple the superior talent with Bamas tradtionally weak schedule and the result is saban wins the games he should and loses regularly against the better teams.

Last year saban faced 3 good teams. He went 1-2.

2012 he faced 3 good teams and went 2-1. AtM, LSU, UGA and all three were super close.

The best team he has ever had was 2011. I believe lsu was the only top ten team Bama faced all year and he was 1-1.

2010 he was 0-3 against good teams.

And so forth and so on.

You would believe wrong. Arkansas finished #5 that year and Alabama beat them 38-14.

And it's not like he's losing to average teams. Since 2008 his losses have been to: (using final rankings)

#1 Florida
#2 Utah
#22 South Carolina
#6 LSU
#1 Auburn
#2 LSU
#5 Texas A&M
#2 Auburn
#6 Oklahoma

6 of his 9 losses since 2008 have come to Top 5 teams. 2 of the remaining 3 were to Top 10 teams. Not even Bobby Bowden in the 1990s had a perfect record against Top 10 opponents. No one does.

And yet, despite that, he's 3-0 in the BCS National Championship Game at Alabama, defeating #2, #1, and #1 by an average of just over 3 touchdowns.

Notice in my post I said good teams and he wins the games he issupposed to against bad and average teams, which is what you appear to be saying as well.

And looks like he has lost 8 games against teams that finished top ten since 2008. How many had he faced? Around 16? That would support my general thoughts that he is a very average game coach at best.

Especially if he does have about a .500 record against teams that finish top ten even though he has had more talent than 95% of those teams even.

Your argument doesn't make sense though. Every coach loses games. Would you rather they lose to bad teams or good teams? If he had won all of those games but was consistently losing to average or poor teams that would be brought up as a knock against his coaching abilities. He has lost 15 times at Alabama with almost half of those coming in the first year. That is a damn great coach. You say he is just a recruiter, I think that is his #1 job. Get the most good players you can. I think every coach in America feels that way too. Not sure many coaches say "I don't want that 5 star. I want to prove how good I am as a coach."

My argument makes sense. I have not said he is a bad game coach and I have said his strength is recruiting and building a program.

His results are exactly as you would expect given superior talent and rather conservative basic style. You rarely lose to a bad team that way but you are only about .500 against good teams.

I'm actually being somewhat generous to him in my evaluation considering the fact he has superior talent even versus the good teams he faces.

Again why he's not auburn HC.

See the pattern, auburn is all family when they are winning but as soon as they start to lose a
few games, they start sneaking behind their coaches back to hire the next messiah.

Nick Saban national championship record-4-0
Gus Malzahn national championship record-0-1

See the pattern.

How many Top 10 opponents does Bama play during the regular season? Typically either LSU and/or Auburn. It's not like Bama's playing a murder's row schedule wise

The problem with your argument is you use his winning percentage against good teams to rationalize your "generosity". Chris Lowe wrote an article about the subject 2-3 years ago and Saban trailed mark richt only in the category "win % vs ranked teams." Now come on back with the regular season and don't use SECC or BCS champion ship games for Saban since they won't support your shot from the hip opinion.

My opinion and analysis are valid.

There is no need to try and make saban into something he is not. But if it makes you feel better, by all means, continue. Doesn't matter.
