The idea that where catholics goto college to play football like it's some kind of deciding factor in the discussion you're trying to have is ridiculous.
It matters where elite athletes want to play football and that is in the SEC where they compete against the best. That has been proven. Notre Dame is a has been.

Recruiting Catholics isn't exactly a target demographic anymore, so even if they are more appealing to Catholics, that's not going to make them more competitive

They may. It's irrelevant. It matters who recruits elite athletes better. How many of those elite athletes are catholic and how many of those are so religious that they would choose a school for its religion? You're talking about a very small percentage of recruits. Again, recruits care which school can best get them to the NFL.
