There's a flaw in your OP, you still use subjective opinion polls.
You either accept opinion polls or you do not. Your OP seems to try to play both sides. If a final poll says a team is #1, it doesn't matter if they didn't play #2 because, just like 1st place, 2nd place is a subjective matter of opinion. If you accept that a team is #2 based on opinion, you may as well just go ahead and accept that a team is #1 based on opinion.
Until college football conducts a tournament of conference champions - with no wild cards - the championship will be subjective.
What kills me about the subjective awards though is fans think they can just claim a championship if they want. LSU can claim 122 championships if they want, it's just that it would be absurd. Some teams don't seem to care about absurd claims on championships. That reflects poorly on them.
Championships are awarded, and either acknowledged by schools or not. They are not 'claimed'.

Following my sound logic, Notre Dame, which claims 11 national titles, has no legit titles...same with Michigan. Yes, you heard me right.
Southern Cal claims also claims 11 titles, but only 2 are legit. Oklahoma claims 7 titles but only one is legit. Ohio State claims 8 but only 3 are legit. There are lots more examples of this.
In conclusion, next time you see Alabama fans (or even Notre Dame fans) popping off about their national titles, just laugh at them and reference this write up. Both the BCS and the future playoff system will render many of those title claims silly (or in Notre Dame's case, all of them).

False. The 1941 bogus claim aside, Bama claims 10 poll titles, which every team that has ever received a poll title from AP, Coaches, or BCS claims. As well as 4 Rose Bowl titles from the 20's and 30's, which other teams claim from that era as well. Again 14 titles are easily defendable and exactly the same way others teams claim them. The one we should throw out is 1941 and I'm in favor of doing that.
