re: Bobby Bowden started head coaching in 1959. From 1959-2020 where does he rank all time.

Bowden finished in the top 5 FIFTEEN years in a row. Saban never did that!
Only won 2 titles though despite playing in 5 title games.

They were talking about early Bowden FSU schedules the other day, in a stretch in the 1980s he went on the road 5 straight weeks and played a p5 team all 5.

FSU also finished #5 in 2000. Not sure what that does to Saban's numbers if you make it top 5 finishes instead of top 4
Nothing really.
Seasons not in the top 4:
2019 - #8 finish, 11-2
2013 - #7 finish, 11-2
2010 - #10 finish, 10-3
2008 - #6 finish, 11-2
2-loss seasons for FSU (top 4):
1998 - 11-2
1995 - 10-2
1991 - 11-2
1990 - 10-2
1989 - 10-2
Honorable mention - 1994 - 10-1-1
If you do top 10 finishes, then it's 14 in a row for FSU and 13 in a row for Alabama.

I'd put Woody Hayes above both of them honestly. He turned OSU into the powerhouse program that both Tressell and Meyer benefitted from. Hayes won the Big 10 9 out of 10 years from 1968-1977 and 5 claimed national titles (3 if you go by API/UPI/Coaches). He also went 10-1 in 1950 at Miami before Miami was a blip on the radar.
And while his time in college football was short-lived, what Pete Carroll did at USC for 9 years was very impressive. 7 straight 11+ win seasons, b2b national titles and very close to b2b2b.
And I'm glad someone else mentioned Bill Snyder. What he did at Kansas State is one of the most impressive jobs in college football history
all great coaches. Frankly Im ok with Woody and McKay being top 5 and ahead of Bowden.
Personally
1. Saban
2. Bear
3. Carrol
4. Bowden
5. Urban
6. McCay
7. Switzer
8. Paterno
9. Tressel
10. Osborne
11. Spurrier
12. Bill Snyder
13. Schnellenberger
14. Rockne
15. Wilkerson
16. Ara
17. Neyland
18. Royal
19. Schembechler
20. Holtz
21. Stoops
22. Dooley
23. Broyles
24. Johnny Vaught

I got to chime in in support of Urban. Helluva football Coach. You cannot argue with his success in spite of being a Gator.
Everywhere he went he won. He is a turd, just like Spur Dog, but great Coach none the less. One Coach I have not seen tossed up was Lou Holtz, consummate journeyman and builder of programs. He was a tough out at Notre Dame and Arkansas. Wonder where some of the SEC Homers place ole Lou??

I already posted my ranking using 1959-present. But now I’ll go with since the start of the AP poll (1936-Present) going by what coaches did at major programs only and not at what we refer to as FCS now.

You could dump Paterno and list is fine. Bowden is a Top 10 all time great. Your list is FULL of true Blue Blood schools. Coach Bowden went to a school on the verge of total collapse. Erector Set stadium holding about 35K in capacity. FSU is the only school to start playing Division 1 football since World War II and win a National Championship. The stadium is now a grand cathedral as good as many Blue Bloods and Better than most of the rest. It is forever the house that “Bobby Built”.
He energized football in the state of Florida. He lead UF to hire Charley Pell and UM hiring Schnellenberger. Bitter enemies on the field, but he roamed the State of Florida in conjunction with Pell and Schnellenberger promoting the rivalries and college football in general. They worked together off the field that led to the State of Florida being the DOMINANT power it is and was in college football.

Have to put Bill Snyder in there too.
Did he never win a natty? Yes. Did he alone take his program for a losing all time record to a winning one? Also yes.
He is one of only 4 coaches to have coached in a stadium named for him.

Game was different back then. A lot harder to win with so many good teams.
