if I remember correctly, because the coaches didn't put him in the game until mid second quarter.

quote:

Shaun Alexander was on the bus trip to Baton Rouge on November 9, 1996. He was a vaunted prospect to be sure, but a prospect nonetheless, locked on the depth chart behind lead-horse Dennis Riddle and the oft-injured-but-well-regarded veteran Curtis Alexander.

quote:

Granted the lack of strategical mystery, LSU’s defense held serve in the first set, as neither team could crack the other’s code in the first quarter. Riddle had seen his share of carries (he finished with 15 for 95 yards), and Curtis Alexander was dinged up and used more as a receiver than back. That set the stage for an increased role for the younger Alexander, and he took advantage of the opportunity to full effect.

Early in the second, less than two minutes into the quarter, on a standard down-standard set running play, Alexander showed a flash of what was to come in his storied career: in short, he made the mundane look spectacular. On second down from the 17-yard line, Alexander took a handoff from Tide quarterback Freddie Kitchens and broke left towards the sideline on a well-blocked power sweep. He got the blocking he needed, to be sure, but it was his patience and square-shouldered technique that allowed him to slip to the edge, round the end, and punch forward with his sneaky-fast speed to squirt down the sideline for the first score of the game. The Tide went up by a score thanks to Alexander’s execution, and as a result, Stallings and McCovery kept feeding him.

Grossman in 2001 was better than Costello. 464 yards and no INTs on a Saban defense.

That's way more impressive than what Costello did vs a historically bad LSU defense.

Burrow played that game with a separated shoulder, but it was still remarkable to see literally one guy carry a defense like that. There were plays to be made all over the field but the guy was in the backfield every single play.

LSU had multiple RBs rush for single game record against OM

I would agree Grossman 2001 was better than Costello, especially given Tiger Stadium was like 15% full

But I’m not sure either would crack my top 5 QB performances if you include LSU QBs in there and control for era

Eh, Fournette against Auburn in 2015 beats either of those

I love how this is turning into fans of other teams just mentioning their personal favorite memory

How many games have y’all attended in Baton Rouge again? I’m up over 200.

Your opinions don’t mean shite in this conversation.

Thank you, sir! Awesome stuff.

And to answer the other poster's question, yes, Shaun was the third back coming into the game.

No problem. SoG and I were discussing that game the other day because I said I bet yall think of Josh Reed like we think of Shaun Alexander. I had already looked that article up so I knew that it answered the questions asked in the thread.

Honestly he might with 50+ carries, and lining him up under center is probably a better option than anything else you have at QB.

I say Shaun Alexander 1996 near 300 yards and 4 tds.

That was my freshman year. Painful to watch. Rohan Davey and Josh Reed returned the favor in 2001.
