Doesn't apply to Auburn in this situation. If you believe the rumors, the PTB already had Steele lined-up and grossly misjudged the blowback.

Didn’t Bama have an opening for months before Saban finally said yes?

5 weeks IIRC. But how likely is it that Auburn's AD Allen Greene has a plan in place to jump on a plane to go pick up an NFL HC & bring him back to the Plains?

Last time Auburn did this, we ended up with the Bobby Petrino Jetgate scandal

Worked fine for A&M last time around. He was targeted before the year even started.

38 Days...late November to early January

I would say that was adequate time to hire the GOAT though.

I'd pump the brakes, Alabama was on the brink of hiring Rich Rodriguez until RichRod's wife balked at moving to TTown. Let's not pretend like Alabama stumbled their way into Saban

Unfortunately, Auburn probably won't stumble their way into 9-3

Because it will be leaked. And it getting leaked can cause more harm to prospective coaches and players than it’s worth.

I’m well aware how Saban was hired, but Bama wasn’t turned down by coach after coach.

Mal Moore was turned down by the1st choice. Had the 2nd choice in the bag until the 2nd choice’s wife stepped. Moore then went back and got his 1st choice.

There were no embarrassing group of five hc name withdrawals.

That's what I think too.

The only way this makes any sense (aside from ineptitude) is that they thought they had a coach in-hand before Gus was fired.

Assuming this was true, it seems most likely that the coach in question was Steele (who received push-back), Cristobal (who bailed after an extension), or an unnamed other (who bailed for reasons unknown).

Because a job fulfillment search with a coach still on the payroll looks worse.
And could lead to worse consequences (internal sabotage, no one wanting to work for a place that treats employees that way, etc..)

Exactly. Its why no elite coach wants Texas. They openly court new head coaches while the current guy is still conducting practices and leading the team into games.
