On this day in 1982 Paul "Bear" Bryant announced his retirement as Alabama football coach after losing 20-10 to LSU and 23-22 to Auburn to close out the season.

"This is my school, my alma mater. I love it and I love my players. But in my opinion, they deserved better coaching than they have been getting from me this year," he said.

Bryant was asked what he planned to after the Liberty Bowl. He replied "Probably croak in a week."

He died less than a month later, January 26, 1983.

Just a reminder. Seems some of you Gumps need it from time to time.

What exactly are you reminding us of? That he retired? That he died?

No shite.

And yet another random Bear Bryant post by some douchebag from another fanbase, as usual.

That the days of Alabama's dominance in the SEC died with him.

It's a concept that seems quite foreign to most bammers.

THIS is a pathetic flame attempt.

Honestly, who cares? And, for an opposing fan to say it?

I really haven't seen any Bama fans talking about Bear Bryant lately. It seems to just be opposing fans who keep obsessing over him.

Give it a rest.

I guess this means we are a month away from the all day coverage of his funeral being played again. Will Nick Saban lead a moment of silence somewhere?
