BDS nickname
Being born in New Orleans and a graduate of LSU, I can only say that the person who put down BDS is full of crap. When I went to LSU, Bama played every home game at Legion Field. BDS was a very small stadium back in the seventies. I'll be honest and tell you what I really feel about this entire thread. I married a girl from a whole in the wall place in Alabama called Millerville. Since she owns a store in Wetumpka, I'm stuck here. First of all BDS makes Tiger Stadium look like a shite hole. What was a very small stadium, metamorphsed itself as one of the best looking and largest stadiums in the country. As far as culture goes, south La. has Alabama beat, but north La. is just like it is here in Al. In case some of you stupid posters don't realize, Mobile has restaurants that are on par with what you find in Baton Rouge. Mardi Gras originated in Mobile and New Orleans turned what was supposed to be a family oriented event into something that is X rated. People here have an accent like Jeff Foxworthy and the minute that I open my mouth up here the people correctly guess that I'm from New Orleans. Like they say, a native New Orleanlian sounds like a person from Boston. As far as hunting goes, Bama has La. beat by a mile when it comes to deer. Fishing and the rest of the outdoors definitely belongs to La. Most people that I know here go down to the La. coast to fish. Look people, both states have a lot to offer and I can honestly say that I was ashamed to be from New Orleans when the national media focused on the dregs of society in New Orleans. I honestly love both states but when it comes to crime, New Orleans is in a class by itself. Being ranked number one in crime in America doesn't surprise me one bit. I'll never forget that when I lived in New Orleans about twenty something years ago, a woman was raped in St. Dominicks Catholic Church on Harrison Blvd. in Lakeview.

You have some skewed thoughts there pal; at the end especially, as does much of the nation.

1. New Orleans "murder" rate is per capita, not NUMBER of murders. And we are not #1 in murders or crime anymore. We never were #1 in crime, not sure where you got that from. And with our new mayor Mitch Landrieu, look for it to improve even more.

2. 99% of the murders occur in the inner city crack houses, poor neighborhoods, and projects.
And 99% of THOSE are committed by and on a majority of 15-45 year old African-American males. Fact. Look it up.

3. There are occasional murders in N.O. East, Treme, and Mid-City, but those are the exceptions. There are about as many murders in the suburbs (which is VERY very few), as occur in the New Orleans French Quarter, downtown, uptown, Faubourg Marigny, Bywater, Garden District, etc. Let me see now, where do most of the tourists want to go when they get off the plane, train, or taxi? - The inner city crack houses and projects?? Uh, nooooooooooooo.

4. There were almost a million people packed into downtown for the Saints parade. There were very few arrests (disturbing the peace, public drunkenness) much less any murders in the city that night; WHEREAS, in NORTHERN cities that win championships, there are: shootings, riots, burning police cars, burning furniture, etc.
Why is that ???????????????????????????

5. You are WRONG about Mardi Gras. SOME parts of the French Quarter do have raunchy and X rated displays, but those are the exceptions.
There are actually areas downtown and even in the residential part of the Quarter where people can bring their kids - even on Mardi Gras Day.

Also, NO FLOAT PARADES go thru the French Quarter during any part of the 2 week Mardi Gras. Parades are for FAMILIES. You can take your children to any parade in New Orleans, Metairie, the North Shore, LaPlace, St. Bernard, West Bank, etc, and you will not find 'X RATED or Pornographic displays. Where the hell did you get that from ?????????
Have you EEEVVVVVVEEERRRRRRR stood on St. Charles Avenue in uptown New Orleans, or on Veterans Memorial Blvd in Metairie to watch a parade with all the little kids on their parents' home made ladders, the playpens, the tents, the BBQs, lawn chairs, etc. ???

No, I didn't think so....

Ok, sorry to get off topic, but I have an actual suggestion for a nickname. I saw this on another board about a year ago.

"The Deep"

Let it sink in for a moment ( sink). Who isn't afraid of drowning? Ties in nicely to the Tide.

What is it with some LSU fans/Louisianans and the "lack of culture" shots made on these boards towards Alabama? I have family in the New Orleans area and think the food is fantastic the culture is fun and unique but I don`t get where the off the charts arrogance comes from. South Louisiana for all its charm (it does have a lot of I admit) is/was an environmental disaster long before Katrina came through. Both states are neck and neck in education and quality of life rankings. LA has right at 4.5 million residents (2009) compared to 4.7 million AL residents (2009) . In fact, AL has been growing much faster than LA since at least 1990 so the LA is a much more desirable place to live than AL among Southerners line isn`t supported by facts. AL overall is a prettier state with mountains/hills, many large lakes, a decent beach, etc with MUCH better deer/turkey hunting and equal freshwater fishing compared to LA. Finally, AL,s overall economy is more diverse than LA`s which is heavily dependent on the oil/petro-chemical/chemical industry.

The Deep is appropriate because you have to wear boots to wade through all the deep shite known as Bama fans. Elephant is tied in because they take such big shits and Bama fans are so full of shite.

A few people on a message board doesn't equate to a majority of Louisianians having "off the charts arrogance." I wouldn't say Alabama or Louisiana is "prettier" than the other. There are some really beautiful state and national parks, wildlife refuges, and of course, centuries old architecture all over Louisiana. As far as hunting, I believe one of Louisiana's mottos is "Sportsmen's Paradise." We have great duck and deer hunting in Louisiana, who cares if there's "more of it" two states over, we still have it! Not disparaging your great state at all.
AS far as the economy, Louisiana has one of the largest ports in the world that brings in products that are sent all over the heartland of this nation! We supply much of this nation's sugar, some of the rice, tobacco, and a lot of it's seafood! Louisiana's tourism industry is one of the best in the country. Now, the New Orleans and Baton Rouge metro areas are receiving an influx of hi-tech business and companies from Silcon Valley and other technology bases.
Louisiana is also better than New York or Hollywood for film making.
The people that take pot shots at either of our great states never seem to accentuate the many positives that we both have. Fock 'em....
