So as of now, Cam only has the gun charge? I mean, if it keeps Cam out of jail there's no way Hootie doesn't eat the weed charge.

It is nowhere near that simple.

They've both got a charge of possessing weed and having a gun along with the weed. Cam's got an additional felony charge because the gun under the seat (I assume it was under his seat) was stolen.

Hootie's gun was in his lap. The weed was in the floorboard. I haven't seen (a) who was driving or (b) who owned the vehicle.

In addition a couple of LSU posters have pointed out that, while it isn't being reported by the media, Louisiana law apparently gives the DA discretion to elevate the gun possession charge to a felony.

The ONLY way Cam could possibly skate would be for Hootie to claim the weed, the car belong to someone else, and the DA believe Cam didn't know the gun was under the seat.

In other words, I've probably got a better chance of winning the lottery than those circumstances being true (or simply happening).

Realistic best case for both is to convince the DA to not elevate the gun charge and get youthful offender status (assuming it exists in Louisiana) on the misdemeanors. For Cam, that would include being able to convince the DA that he didn't know and didn't have any reason to suspect that his gun was stolen.

More and more, it is becoming apparent that they're in a pretty big mess and actual time behind bars isn't out of the question.

2) It shall be an affirmative defense to a prosecution for a violation of this Section that the offender had no knowledge that the firearm was the subject of any form of misappropriation.

I may be wrong, but isn't possession of a stolen firearm a felony?

Yes. He's charged with a felony.

They probably were there to witness for Christ, with their guidance a young soul made a profession of faith, and gave up his guns and drugs, washing away his sinful lifestyle in the blood of the Lamb

Yeah because ignorance is an acceptable reason to commit a felony.

It's not a felony if you didn't know it was stolen. It's not illegal to own firearms, in case you didn't know.

Texas A&M hasn't had any players arrested for anything other than jaywalking in several years.

Lap? When he saw lights he just said oh maybe they won't notice?

He must have been BAKED

I think this is a good guess.

But with police coming, maybe he didn't want to get fresh prints on the gun

Maybe the gun was loaded, and he was so nervous he didn't want to risk discharging it

Maybe he didn't want to risk touching it and getting shot
