The problem is that there are going to be many JUCO and high school players that lose their scholarship in the spring because the school they are committed to gets an amazing transfer.
Unfortunately you're exactly right, as that was the case here.
Wilson was a highly-rated JUCO product, and we were excited to get him at the time. There's a chance he could go back down this year and still re-sign at a later date, albeit remote.

This season is different. Transfers are being gathered knowing they are not going to have to sit out. This is what free agency looks like at the college level.
While this is true, the trend of players in the portal has risen almost every year recently as well. It's been a trend.
Straight from that website i linked above, players in the portal each year in D1 basketball:
2021 - 1,329 (currently)
2020 - 1,025
2019 - 989
2018 - 882
2017 - 904
2016 - 800
2015 - 829
2014 - 752
2013 - 672
2012 - 577
So even ignoring this year with the 1 time transfer free rule that should pass...we've gone from 577 in 2012 to almost double that in 2020. There's been no real change in number of D1 teams over this time frame.

The biggest difference this year is the number of guys with multiple years left jumping in because they can do it and play immediately.
Before it was *mostly* grad transfers who wanted 1-2 years at a bigger place or at a smaller place for more PT and freshmen/sophomores who wanted a change of scenery. This season it's basically everybody.

Yeah but even in his case, he still has the chance to go to some really good basketball programs.
Sucks he can't go to the program he wanted but the real losers of the portal are the players way down the line.

Since reopening his recruitment, prior Alabama pledge Langston Wilson tells @Stockrisers he’s heard from Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Clemson, DePaul, SMU, Western Kentucky, Texas A&M, Maryland, Iona, CSB, New Mexico State, Murray State, amongst (many) others.

UConn is the latest program that has reached out to former Alabama pledge Langston Wilson, he told @Stockrisers. In just Day One, he reeled in tons of new suitors and I expect that to continue.
The option of re-committing to Alabama is also still on the table.

Certainly seems that way. This will probably take years to fully shake out.

While I wouldn't mind some slight changes to the portal, I think in general many are overacting. There will be some level of self correction too.
Obviously your view on it changes to based on if your team is doing well in this portal era or poorly.

I think this year is a cluster of massive proportions, but I think the regular years without no-sit out free agency are generally ok.
