This quote of tool's:
quote:

As soon as Saban leaves and they hire someone that can't survive in his shadow, they will no longer be on LSUs radar anyway.

...piqued my interest as to the validity of his opinion. His opinion apparently is based on historical significance of both programs. So, going by CFB Datawarehouse's figures (which also knocks off 29 of Bama's victories due to vacations), the numbers add up as such...

Bama All-time Record
814-320-43, a 0.6916 winning percentage.

Bama Minus Bear & Saban
532-262-34, a 0.6425 winning percentage.

LSU All-time Record
734-390-47. a 0.6268 winning percentage.

I wonder if LSU's record would surpass Bama's if I took away the records of Wade and Thomas?

You've been very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and have had a lot of great coaches. LSU has not been as fortunate although we've had a few.

That is the one and only reason for this stat.

You can say that about every top program in the country.

Ok, explain to me how Bama's great history is due to anything other than things like an Alabama scout showing up in Fordice, Arkansas at precisely the right time in history to kidnap a young Bear Bryant to play at Alabama as anything other than luck? Do you think he would have heard "Mama call" had he played and coached at say Arkansas?

Or what about the extreme good fortune of having a coach like Nick Saban fall into your lap at precisely the right time anything other than luck?

Even if those things hadn't happened then obviously Bama would still be a good program. But if you don't get lucky like that again in the future you're not "assured" of being successful. No program is. It's earned, not given.

A lot of UAT posters have just about killed this board.

They are stupid, but I'm forced to bring them up because some alabama fans are so dumb they actually think there is something supernatural or special about Alabama than guarantees they will always have a top tier football program. I'm sure Notre Dame fans felt the same way in 1988.

yep LSU hires the next big name in football and he dies before ever coaching a game.

fapping to old history is great but shite from the 70s isn't all that relevant to todays game and this season.

ill take being a top 10 program all time and being a power house right now than a history like ND where i would have never seen the glory years.

So our entire existence is based on luck?

sounds like the alabama scout was outworking the arky scout

quote:

Or what about the extreme good fortune of having a coach like Nick Saban fall into your lap at precisely the right time anything other than luck?

We didn't twist his arm. Nick Saban had a great job, he was an NFL head coach.

quote:

It's earned, not given

Precisely. This is why tradition is so important. Alabama can lure a guy away from the nfl due to it. Tradition comes from outworking your opponents through the years, not dumb luck

Too bad that same logic couldnt be used by your fellow Bama fans when those field goals were missed. "oh derr, if they made them fgs, game wuldnt if been close"

I think Notre Dame will be back because of the tradition that has intensified the following, money, etc. Their drought isn't any longer than those we saw Ohio State (2002), Texas (2005), and USC (2004) end just recently. Most of those program had been 30 or more years between titles.
