Played on it a fair bit when I was in grad school there, but I heard that it shut down in the early 2000s. What did they do with that land? Any plans to reopen it?

Updyke got pissed after the Sugar Bowl loss and took matters into his own hands.

I used to play on it as well as a student. Not sure why it closed but the golf teams moved to the Colony.

Nothing official, but it was shut down for a couple of reasons.
First, it was competing with the city of Tuscaloosa's nice Ol Colony golf course, so the Parks and Recreation encouraged its closure.
Second, a few realtors/ builders got their hands in on the deal figuring they could sell off the land for a neighborhood or two. But the housing market slumped and nothing became of that.
For now the former course is officially the University's Cross Country course/track/field . There also is the adjacent University arboretum, however that is the same as it was before the course closed.
The land basically sits with tall weeds, etc. growing in the former fairways, probably some sweet gums and pines growing now. It's not really a dog park by name although it is a great place to take a dog for a walk. You can still walk the cart paths and the lakes are still there.
