Consistently make the 12 team playoff and be in the conversation for the SEC and national championship. No expectations of winning it all every year. Same expectations other teams like Ohio St, LSU, UGA, FSU, USC, Texas, etc will have.

9-3 record rebuilding years when we lose a ton of seniors and players to the draft will be acceptable here and there. I would expect top 5-10 recruiting classes rather than top 1-3. That is the main difference in lowered expectations post Saban.

It really depends on what players he will have stay with this team. If he has a good core of returning starters and players with some experience, then I would think 9-3 would be ceiling and that may even get you into the playoffs.
If a bunch transfer out, then 8-4-7-5 would be ok the first year. Second year you want to see some improvement. .

If he can keep us in the top 10-15 recruiting, go 9-3 -10-2 with a shot a the playoffs, then that’s all we can ask for and that’s good enough for me.

Or is there an internal admission that nobody’s going to replicate that and that DeBoer’s the best guy to keep the program at a very high level and maybe win a title or two along the way?

This, from a reasonable Bama fan

- 10 wins
- Beat Auburn & Tennessee
- come out prepared for games (lacking the last few years)
- contend for a championship most years (if all of the above are happening, this should be easy with the 12 team playoff)

Why?

Those aren't that far-fetched of a 5 year outcome for a program that's in a better state than 99% of the other programs in the country at the moment

I mean, yeah, eventually that might be the case. I think it's a lot to ask your fanbase, especially the "extended" portion, to get to that reality overnight.

We're already doing this, really. We just played an entire season with a fake quarterback and had a mind-numbingly bad DC the two years before that.

First year expectations should be lower. Who knows how the portal will play out.

After that, It's Alabama, so the expectations should be that he starts to field teams on par with what the handful of other elite programs expect. . .
Be a consistent league and national title contender.

10 wins a year and beating AU and UT more often than not will satisfy the vast majority

Not for long.

Fortunately for DeBoer, CFP expands to 12 spots next year so bar not so high for getting in. But he will definitely be expected to be in the CFP every other year on average and win the natty every 5 years or so. Not at Saban's rate but he needs to be in the convo with Kirby.

I mean, Kelly isn't going to keep his job just winning 10 a year either. Beating Bama every few years would help but it's not enough to keep your job long term. Expectation, sooner or later, is that you are in the CFP and in the mix for a natty and actually deliver one every 5 years or so.

If he can go 10-2 and sneak into the playoffs somewhat regularly and limit the bad years to 8-4 then I'd say it's a resounding success.

So, Nick finished 12-2 this season with a playoff appearance & overtime loss. If that constitutes a failure, maybe they should rewrite the definition of Failure.

A flash in the pan PAC 12 coach with no connections to the SEC or the South. What could possibly go wrong? I’m loving it.

He's won everywhere he's been. He's about to get a roster with far more talent than he's ever had. We'll see what kind of staff he puts together and what the roster looks like following spring, but this is very exciting given there were a lot of less exciting and promising names getting thrown around

Good luck to all the haters next season
