Not only is The Machine real, it's very much alive. I had friends in sororities. They didn't like the sorority or the Greek system in general but they refused to talk about The Machine.

They stole a city election last year. That's pretty important.

White greek organizations that are told which candidate to vote for in SGA elections, homecoming courts, etc., so they can vote as a bloc.
It can be an advantageous item to you, though, should you decide to go into Alabama politics.
Most notably, however, 70 of them recently committed voter fraud to get a former member elected to the Tuscaloosa city council. (He would have won even without the fraud)

It's real. I graduated from Bama.
They get a certain amount of money from the greek organizations every year - some groups have reported it to be in the hundreds per member (of the sorority/fraternity, not the machine) per semester.
Honestly, what I've heard is that they just have a huge amount of control over who gets nominated for SGA positions and they decide who should get most of the Greek votes - which, 90% of the time, determines the winners.
Apparently the members in it have a massive bar tab at most of the places from the money they get from the greeks.

Many current and past state politicians involved.
Beginning in the late 70s they were challenged by a coalition that included sororities. End result was they invited the more powerful sororities in.

It's real, but no one really cares. It's just student elections.

That's really becoming obsolete IMO. The political landscape isn't what it was during the Wallace era

True. The landscape in the state has definitely shifted, but those who enter college with political aspirations still join these organizations.

You stupid kid.
I'm a Rec-r and I did my time at UAH. Engineering was better there than UA, and I wasn't about to be an auburn gay. I wanted an education not a coloring book.

Yes it's very real. Student political stuff and homecoming is all true. it also does more within the Greek system itself. There are rumors about other things it does but the only real people who know the complete ins and outs are the people who are within the machine who are the representatives from each chapter that is a part of it.
