Anyone else feel like we're not going to see a big drop-off in defense? I know we're losing a lot in Barron, Dre, Menzie, Jerrell Harris, Dont'a, Upshaw, and Chapman, but I feel like we still have a lot of experience coming back. We had multiple true freshmen get considerable playing time this year, and they stepped up and appeared fairly comfortable in their position. I just think with the talent we have coming back, and the talent we have filling the big shoes of those leaving, we aren't going to see nearly the drop-off we saw in 2010.

We could have a pretty good defense next year, but it would still be a big drop off from this year's defense.

I almost started this thread but thought it would turn to shite really fast. So much can happen but if the DBs coming in can step up I think Alabama will be in the discussion for best team in the country. They will have to work hard and earn every bit of it but I think it can be done. I won't be surprised if they lose 2 games but I sure as hell won't write em off for reaching the SECCG either.

we will have a huge drop off but still have a good defense.

This years D was just unbelievable. Sabans best D ever.

Alabama's defense this year might be the greatest I've ever seen. Definitely the best since the '03 LSU team. Y'all only gave up 9 td's this season right?

I'm actually not as concerned about DB's as I probably should be. Lester coming back will help, plus Milliner, who is very much a seasoned veteran. Travell Dixon has already enrolled (I think), so he has plenty of time to learn the defense. Of course, there is no substitute for on-field experience, but I still feel good about him. Also, let's not forget Jon Fulton.

Drop off in talent will be less significant than dropoff in leadership. That was big difference in 2010 team. So hard to keep a team hungry.

Lose Barron, Chapman, Gentry, Hightower, Upshaw, Menzie, Dre, Harris.

Signal caller in secondary and at LB. Chapman was anchor of DL. No way to replace all that leadership and experience regardless of talent returning.

Hopefully offense is explosive enough to lead the way. OL should be sick and WRs should be most talented ever.

Wow. Reading that on here really makes it sink in how dominate they were. I know there will be a big drop-off. I guess I'm just saying I don't know if they will look as lost as the 2010 defense looked at times.

I am really optimistic about next season. Whether it turns out good or bad. Where do you think the defense will be lacking?

I think the thing that helps in preparation for next year is the fact that our young guys experienced a loss this year. In 09, we went undefeated, and I think it kind of made that freshman class almost feel like they were on an invincible team. I've really liked the attitude I've seen from the freshmen this year. The guys on our special teams really laid it out there every game.

Either in the secondary (CB specifically), or linebacker. I'm more inclined to say secondary. We have several returning players at linebacker, and our coaches seem to do an excellent job with our young linebackers anyway.

I also think it boils down to chemistry. As someone already pointed out, we lost a lot of leadership. Some people are gonna have to step up in the spring and really establish themselves as the new leaders.

Look, we may never see a defense like this one again. Having said that, all these people that say Bama will have a huge drop-off are whistling past the grave yard. It will be Top-10, if Saban finds a run-plugger at NT (Still the most important position in Saban's D), it will be Top-5.

The D-Line will be solid. Jesse Williams is a stud. Stinson showed he is solid at DE. It all depends on the replacement for Chapman.

The LB corps will be the best in the conference, if not the nation. CJ & Nico on the inside will be the best pair of ILBs in th country. DePriest showed he is solid at the OLB spot. And everyone knows that Saban has a ton of talent to draw from to fill the other OLB spot.

The secondary will be better than 2010. Lester is returning at one safety spot. Sunseri played a lot this year and Ha-Ha should be ready to step in at the other S spot. Milliner was practically a starter at one CB position. There'sa reason Nick brought in 2 JUCO CBs this year. That's to prevent the coverage lapses that haunted 2010.

11-1

I really think its not a talent issue at those positions as much as a losing leadership and experience.

But linebacker is key. I feel like yalls linebackers are the core of the team, and losing Upshaw could be problematic.

Will be like 2010

Good, but young defense more than likely to make mistakes.

I think the linebackers will be fine. CB will be interesting and fun to see play out. Upshaw will be tough to replace too. What guys will be fighting to replace him?

I am too. Our second stringers subbed in enough this year to get a LOT of playing time. We killed most of the teams we played this year which made for a lot of mop up duty on top of the fact that Saban subs in players a hell of a lot during the course of a game.

I don't think we will lack in any 1 place, we are losing key players from each of the 4 teirs of the defense so its all dependent on which guys that move up are gonna step up and perform and which ones are just going to fill their roles.

Linebacker is gonna be tough losing Hightower, Harris, and especially Upshaw. I dont know that we have a ferocious pass rusher that can really fill Upshaw's shoes so we are gonna need to have more pressure on the QB from across the entire front 7.

We keep Lester so we will have an experienced safety.

We lose both Menzie AND SwagPatrick so that may be where we see the biggest droppoff.

Gentry and Williams will be back on the line and they are really the heart and soul of that line anyway. Chapman was great but I think Gentry is gonna make him look silly next year.

Like someone said earlier, the loss we took this year will help keep them from getting that same mentality we had in 2010. I just hope that is enough.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see true freshman Alphonse Taylor filling his shoes. I'm not as worried about his lack of experience. NG is a critical position, but it doesn't come with nearly as many responsibilities as most of the other positions.
