This topic could make for a helluva philosophical discussion.

A sadly necessary day for humanity. God bless all those lost souls and those amazing Americans on that plane and on the ground.
And thank God that Japan and America have the best relationship of any Asian- Western country.
3 nattys since then !

From Wikipedia:
quote:
The United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, with the consent of the United Kingdom, as required by the Quebec Agreement. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict.

Thank God both sides have moved on in the spirit of brotherhood. A testament to the National character of BOTH sides. We couldn’t ask for more than peace and prosperity.

Oh and for he Catholics on the board, here’s what happened to the main Cathedral for Catholics in Japan, St. Mary’s aka Urakami Cathedral:
quote:
The atomic bomb that fell on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 detonated in Urakami only 500 m (1640 ft) from the cathedral, completely destroying it. As the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) was near, Mass was held on the day and was well attended. The resultant collapse and heat-wave cindered and buried all those present in the Cathedral.[5] The destruction of the cathedral hit the religious community of Nagasaki the hardest, as they viewed it as a loss of spirituality. It had such an impact, that noted playwright Tanaka Chikao wrote his most successful play, Head of Mary, about the efforts of Christians in Nagasaki to reconstitute their faith by rebuilding the Virgin Mary.[

I think we're all pretty aware of when and what happened. My issue is your emphasis on the bombing of civilians.

108 years ago today, Lucille Desiree Ball was born in Jamestown, New York...the greatest comedic actress in Hollywood history.
She was a tough, but very good businesswoman...loyal and caring to a fault to all her employees.
I had the honor of meeting her twice back on the old Desilu Studio lot, just after she sold Desilu Studios to Gulf+Western and was merged into the current Paramount Pictures studio organization (where I've worked for what seems a thousand years now).
Interestingly, Lucille never thought of herself as being funny...only being good at "acting funny". The late, great actors Red Skelton and Buster Keaton taught her the fine art of comedy in the late 1940's after her career in MGM and RKO dramas wasn't taking off.
As we all know, the rest is history...
Happy Birthday, Lucy!

There are great Nagasaki/Hiroshima oral histories out there for those interested. Sadly far fewer oral histories of the many multiples of civilians massacred in Nanking and elsewhere. Btw, I had elderly Japanese friends and students ( men and women) 50 years after the fact who served in China and elsewhere . Just human beings caught in a historical maelstrom.
Thankfully it’s almost 100 years in the past.

Yep. It was a terrible thing but even many Japanese now recognize that what the Japanese leaders and military were doing made it necessary. For those who think the US was wrong in dropping the bombs should really read up on Japanese war crimes during WWII. It might shock you.

If the pussys that are around today were in charge then, then there is no way we would have won WWII. The bombs that were dropped on Japan saved more lives than were lost, both American and Japanese. Many “civilians”lost lives in WWII. Many Americans that are alive today that are bitching would not have been born if the bombs were not dropped. You’re father/grandfather/great-grandfather would have died in the invasion of Japan, including most Japanese civilians.
