How did Durkin get the gig? He's done nothing to warrant a Head Coaching job at an SEC school, especially one with some tradition.

THis is a hire you make after every coach, including deceased ones turn you down.

Have they given up? Do they owe a ton of coaches and are broke?

Definitely going to be Durkin after Florida people convinced Sumrall that he would be micromanaged and fired within 2 years at AU.
All they had to do was tell him the truth.

Novel approach.

Same school that hired Gene Chizik who had a losing record at Iowa St. They're not overly concerned about the coach's record as they are on whether the coach will do what the boosters tell him to do. Coaches who have options don't choose Auburn.

If Auburn is using Durkin as a place holder until a better candidate surfaces in a year or two, that's understandable given the fact that there's too many openings and not enough qualified coaches today.
