Paul Dietzel started that tradition and DiNardo brought it back. Vandy was pissed that we took their coach, and we couldn't wear whites in that game in 96.

The first time was in 2007 against Vandy as part of the 50th anniversary of the national championship team. The white unis more closely match something that the '57 team wore than the blue unis do. For that came they replaced the cages with gray facemasks.
We also wore all white against UT Martin for HC last year. I don't knw the exact reason for that. I know a couple of years ago UTM had a uniform that looked a lot like Auburn with the sleeve stripes, etc. so we may have worn white to make them wear orange to avoid any on field confusion.
