Roof and chizik where having a heated conversation when SC was about to have a 3rd & 17-20ish. Chiz was pissed and you could tell by chiziks hand expressions that he was explaining to roof the saftey positions. I saw several indications that told me chiz was still letting roof have input but when he didn't like what roof called he changed it
There is no doubt Chiz was instructing Roof on that play and there is little doubt he told Roof to call a timeout right before SC snaapped the ball so we could maybe try to guess their play call (which they changed anyway). That is the only time the cameras caught anything that could be construed as Chiz being more involved. He certainly was there, but he tends to be in crucial moments of every game (like bama last year instructing Gus to go for it on 4th).
Other than that, I haven't seen anything from anybody with any real firsthand knowledge of Chiz "taking over the defense". Maybe he is more involved. He should be if he has anything he can add that will help, but if he is more involved, the coaches are not going to be broadcasting anything and it is just guesswork by us as fans.
Oh yeah, Roof is certainly not gone at this point. As has been the case since day 1, this defense has to show improvement as the year progresses and that is ultimately what Roof will be judged on. The jury is still out and even if we get shredded against Arky, the jury is still out. How the D finishes is what counts this year. That mainly means LSU, UGA, and Bama. The first half of the season is over next week and we will see how we finish.

I dont think he has "taken over the defense". He's always been involved with it. I think yesterday's defensive "improvement" had more to do with the AU time of possession on O and the horrid nature of USCe's O than anything else. AU still had missed tackles galore, but did have fewer blown assignmenta.

I'm just saying if you took it from the Opelika-Auburn News, give credit to the source.
And it came from the OA News. Bottom of pages 4&5 B.

???
The AU time of possession was so high because USCe only converted 2-10 3rd downs.
Getting off the field on 3rd down has been the defenses biggest problem.

Dothan Eagle is owned by the OA News or they get a lot of their stuff from them IIRC

i agree with this assessment... although i though we tackled a lot better and didn't have a "galore" of misses... some, but not a ton.
If anything, chizik took the reigns off a little bit and let roof run more of what he likes to do -- bring pressure and play man... less of the safe bend-don't-break nature of Chizik's Ds at AU.

It is a combination of the two. The D did great on third down and getting the ball back to the O. The O didn't have a lot of big plays and kept it on the ground which is the other half of the equation to such a lopsided time of possession stat.

That was certainly a factor, but if AU was unable to have success on O to sustain drives then their t.o.p wouldnt have been so high.
AU had a great gameplan. O didnt score much, but they helped the D with the type of play calling more this week than in previous weeks. That said, I wouldnt kid myself into thinking AU has fixed their defensive issues in one week if I were you. Still tons of fundamental issues like missed tackles. Improved? Absolutely. "Fixed"? Not completely.

More proof Chizik never plays man...
This rare occasion of man with cover 2 over the top even led to a INT. I can see why Chizik never likes to run man.
Posted on 10/2/11 at 8:57 pm to bamasgot13
AU defense definitely not fixed. However, that one shot of Chiz instructing Roof definitely shows that the defense that was on the field was very much Chiz's D. I know Chiz likes to be a base Tampa 2 defense, which is a lot of zone, but ever since I started watching his defenses at AU and Texas, I always remember him being a big man defense with unique blitzes.

Did you really go back 5+ years to a game against BAYLOR to try to prove a point?
I agree Chiz doesnt call much man, but still images dont prove your point. That could have easily been a cover two cloud with the corners in the flats and the corner dropping into umbrella coverage when action went opposite initially.
ETA: btw, I was talking about second pic from bottom. Others are pretty clearly man coverage against Baylor.

A couple of blitz packages and reactions to plays cannot describe a scheme. All defenses run a mixture of things. And no, I wouldn't expect you to pull up more diagrammed plays. Chizik likes to run cover 2 zone with the MLB dropping into coverage. Roof prefers more man and blitz packages. This doesn't mean Chizik never uses man and Roof never uses zone.
What I trying to tell you guys is that barring superhuman individual performances (Newton and Fairley) teams don't normally recover so quickly from coaching changes caused by ineptitude (Tuberville). The program has been building toward 2012-2013 since the start, only we caught lightening in a bottle in 2011.
We have a quality DC with quality assistants who are dealing with lots of young talent. Be patient.

The last three pics were the same play.
