Saban screwed over those two players no doubt. He looked like an arse. Watching Philon's conference was hard. It should have the crowning day for all his hard work and his shining moment. But he looked devastated.

On the flip side, Saban has to work with the numbers. A guy may commit earlier, then later on a more talented person commits. It's a business, you go with the most bang for your buck. It sucks, but it is business.

Obviously I have no dog in this fight as a LSU fan, but I am bothered by the Philon story more than the Taylor story. With Taylor he was told early enough that it allowed him to visit other universities. But, this was not the case with Philon. I think it is wrong to pull a full scholarship from a young man who has committed everything to attending a university, so much so he does not visit another university during the recruitment process. I guess we do not know the entire story, perhaps he was told a few weeks ago that if the numbers became tight, he would not be given the full scholarship. If that is the case, then he has some blame in not arranging for other visits. There is a part of me that thinks he had to make other visits, possibly unofficial to decide in one day to attend another university.

That's what I thought. My follow up question was gonna be how much was Dyer's buyout.

Sorry, I don't. I would check either the Montgomery advertiser or prattville progress.

I wish some people would quit using the phrase "pulled his scholarship", when in fact, Philon still had the opportunity to attend UA and play ball here for free. All he would have to do is wait a little while longer than expected. Deferred his scholly? Sure. Pulled it? Absolutely not.

Exactly. A greyshirt offer is still a scholarship. it covers book, tuition, room, food, tutoring, medical, etc. it just starts in Jan instead of Aug.

Do all greyshirts get schollies the following year? I'd be hesitant to take their word on it after they back tracked on the original offer.

Quick question, Does a school/coach have to let the player enroll, even in january? What if they decided he wasnt good enough for the next year?

The offer to attend school this fall was in fact pulled. He was committed to UA for months, while not looking around because he thought he was assured of a scholly for the fall semester. Meanwhile other kids are BS'ing around and decide at the last minute they want to sign. If it is no big deal to defer their scholly, then why not
greyshirt them.

Every player that has taken a greyshirt under saban has been allowed to join the team in January.

BS move by Saban, any criticism he gets on this is well deserved.

That doesnt really answer my question. Obviously things will be a little different from next year on with the 25 limit rule, as there wont really be many grey shirts produced by the LOI limit, maybe some for the 85 limit, but those players have time to be processed

The players that accept a greyshirt WILL be accounted for in the next class.

If they enroll in January. The question I have(not directed at you directly) is Does the school have to honor a grey shirt commit when it comes time for EE

Philon is coming off knee surgery. He wouldn't see playing time as a true freshman anyway. Why burn your scholly on him when you can get him some extra rehab time and offer him the same sweet deal in January?
