Yep, sucks. I grew up with Arkansas a national power. Played HORSE with my grandpa outside in the driveway during halftimes. And for twenty years, nothing.
I have become pretty apathetic, but basketball season used to be joyous.

Nothing in that article that hasn't been rehashed on here countless times. We chose Stan Heath over Bill Self and effectively neutered our own program.

Theory is Frank wanted to deemphasize basketball...

I didn't realize that USC is the only school who has had a longer sweet 16 drought.

In the SEC?
Arkansas doesn't have near the final four drought of Bama.

Good read.
Arkansas was stupidly good in basketball in the early 90s.
They are a sleeping giant IMO. Just need to land the right coach.

We were not only landing McD AAs at a good clip, many of them were redshirting.

Yes, but no commitment to the sport from the school to get it back to that level. It was like pulling teeth to get a practice facility/ operations center near the starting point of construction. A new football operations center, indoor baseball and track practice facility had to be be constructed first.

There have been larger problems than just the coach. Pelphrey set the program back to where Heath found it.

The last couple years of Mike has made me realize a very sad truth... 40 minutes of hell that I grew up loving so much is over. I know the hand check rule happened in '96, but I've kept holding onto the notion that style can be altered for rule changes and still be effective. I think it can be done, but it takes a very specific brand of coach and players. I don't know if we have either.
frick the hand check rule

I always thought Arkansas started to suck when hand checking got banned.

Yeah I don't think that's a sustainable brand of basketball when you face teams who are just as athletic but also fundamentally sound.

A NCAA witch hunt took place breaking up the roster that went to the sweet16 and restricted our JUCO recruiting as well as other sanctions for the program.
The NCAA admitted they were wrong and allowed the players to transfer back with restored immediate eligibility, then the Herrod fricktard went through a divorce causing further sanctions to the football and basketball programs.

I think its to the point where they have been neutered beyond repair. They'll never be a national power ever again. They were building something special, but they'll never get back to where they were.

Yep. Sadly, MA is trying to continue the trend.

It can still be effective, just as much as any other style of play. Mike has had a hard time with turning the roster over due to the APR issues caused by Heath and Pel, he finally got the forwards in and has the guards lined up with more balanced recruiting classes in the future.
The roster he inherited wasn't assembled to play any style of play, it was Pel signing the best he could find and hoping something would work out on the court. He was forced to keep the guards as they should graduate this year, the tallest player on that roster was 6'6"-6'9", a couple of them, the guards were all around the 6' mark.
